Just wondering - what kinds of music do you people enjoy hearing or performing? What instruments do you play?

Personally, I enjoy listening to cool, new Native American Hip Hop. But that's just me (ahhememmmmm). I know how to play four instruments - so there! And that doesn't include the kazoo! Ha!

The art of showing off without actually showing off? ;) (Which four instruments do you play...?)

Personally I listen to any kind of music except hiphop & socalled 'folk music', and I tend to annoy my neighbours with my guitar...

[IMG] And what if he did it in "Pre selfdefence"? Some might pop up her and claim: "Hip Hop! You have no sence of music!!"... Now they can't really say that, can they. ;)

I would rather say what I don't like; Heavy metal and worse. IF I want 120 decibel of screaking guitars and heavy drumming I can always visit the airport and stad by the engines. :p

I listen to punk, pop rock and some hard rock. 120 decibels in my ears! Woo Hoo! I've already lost some of my hearing to it but I really dont mind. It's good music. I like Celtic music some what and I also like the music from River Dance.

My interest are in progressive and symphonic rock and metal. Especially metal with fantasy-lyrics, like Nightwish, Rhapsody, Hammerfall and Blind Guardian. I don't like most of the commercial music you hear on radio/mtv every day....

Wednesday is the Rhapsody concert in the Netherlands and friday Blind Guardian.

    ArchAngel, tsk...tsk...:nono:
What you described is not Metal...Far from it. Metal is beautiful, fast, complex, melodic and loud. Sure, it's loud. But, Jimi Hendrix played loud too. I bet if I turned up "Help" next to you, you would never want to listen the Beatles again.

And about your screaking guitars and heavy drumming - that is something that is EXTREMELY hard to play and demands a whole lot of work, will, persistency and nerves.
Playing like John Petrucci, Dave Murray, Alexi Laiho, Michael Romeo, Brian May etc. isn't something that just falls from the sky in your hands. And that deserves respect.
    Same thing with the drummers.
Bear in mind that I mean real Rock/Metal, not the Nu-Metal shit that is dragging along nowadays.

Anyway, as you can see, I like rock and metal (duh!). Love classical music too, especially orchestrated and stringed. I'd die if I could play the cello.
Guess that movie & game soundtracks somehow fall into that cathegory. I dislike rap, hip-hop and utterly dispize any form of electronic artificial techno crap.
And finally, I too play the guitar...:)
    And drive my neigbours crazy...

Headbanger! You lucky git! I wish I had such bands come to my country!
Which itself is a hopeless utopistic thought...:(

I play four instruments. Guitar, violin, piano, and trumpet. I am pretty shaky on everything but the piano. I listen to music which satifies the intelligent mind but drives the stupid people crazy. That is-Jimmmy Hendrix, Dave Mathews, and other "dumb" (word derived from the barbaric conformist and stupid people) artists.

[IMG] I am into "difficult" jazz at the minute... A frined and I work at a local pub in the holidays, and we are going to replace all the tracks on the jukebox (all crap) with a Dizzy Gillespie track - "Swing Low Sweet Chariot"... nice...

I used to play the flute, but only cos we were all made to learn an instrument at school, and the bloody flute was the only one that fitted in my bag properly - meaning I could get it home okay and hide it from my mum when she wanted to hear my "progress" :nono:

I play no instrument at all, and very seldom do I listen to music. Music must be the most overrated phenomenon in the human history. When I do listen to music it is mostly rock from the 80's and hiphop from the early 90's, only real decent music there is. Hate all the extreme commercial crap that runs on MTV and similar, not to mention the radio :flaming:

Anyway, i play, acoustic, electric and bass guitar and know a few drum beats.

Please see my post here about metal. Besides that, I like anything that happens to grab me. Folk, female jazz vocals, industrial, classic rock, classical, opera, Hawaiian reggae, regular reggae, just about anything. Except pop. I despise the radio, and hate Mtv with the white-hot passion of a thousand suns.

    No instruments.

Oh, and Elendil, Mike Romeo! I adore that guy. When it comes to Romeo's playing...I don't know, words fail me. I saw them in concert last year, and when they ended their set his hands were bleeding. The band went off stage for 15 minutes, then came back out to play 'Wings' as the encore. The sheer power of the music almost brought me to tears.

I don't play any instruments. Maybe the kazoo.

Lately, I've listened to a lot of Nickelback, Creed, Disturbed, Goo Goo Dolls, and assorted others.

Sorry Elendil. Didn't mean to cause any fuzz. If its Nu-metal that is bad then let it be that. I couldn't seperate the genres of metal now without lying. I just [generally [edited for C-Lee ;)]] dislike that distict type of music which most people label "metal".

Respect? of course. IF they are good at what they are doing. I do play Beatles on my guitar, or try to anyway *snicker*

Oh and ADD techno crap to my dislike list :)

Else everything is generally honky dory.

Someone has to say this at some point, so it may as well be me :square: ...

There is no point in saying that you "hate" a genre of music... I dislike unoriginal or talentless music, but that doesn't necessarily mean that I hate all nu stuff for example... Then you end up saying that "I hate all hip hop. Oh, except for ...".

I just like listening to stuff I haven't heard before.

Right, here's the exhaustive list of what I play.
(More or less in order of preference)
Electric bass, upright acoustic bass, guitar, didgeridoo, piano, drums, mandolin (also mandola and bourzouki), recorder(way back when I was at school).
My specialist subject is bass which I also teach, and I like all kinds of music, but particularly jazz.

*Disclaimer for insurance purposes - I'm not so good on the recorder any more...

I play the viola myself, but I'm not especially a great fan of classical music, although I do enjoy it from time to time.

As for genres I enjoy listening to, I don't really like one per se. If a good song comes my way, I like it, regardless of genre. However, I do listen to a lot of soundtracks, instrumental music (like rock without the lyrics), and (yes!) Christian rock.

I don't play any instruments myself, but I do spend a lot of time listening to music. I listen a lot to the blues (all kinds of blues), but I can also appreciate songs from some other music genres, it totally depends on the song.

[IMG] WARNING: I don't really like Native American Hip Hop. I don't think there is such a thing.

Here are SOME the artists that I enjoy hearing:

    Dave Matthews
    Victor Wooten & Bela Fleck
    Stevie Ray Vaughan
    Wynton Marsalis & family
    Led Zeppelin
    Grand Funk Railroad
    Return To Forever
    Billy Cobham
    George Benson...

There's a bunch. I am an all-life percussionist (I don't like to say Drummer because it gives one the wrong idea), guitarist, pianist & keyboard dude, and I can 'play' the saxophone. Khaliib, you might disagree with that last one. Haha.

The kazoo, though, is the instrument that no man can play but I, for in itself I am God!

Black/gothic metal, old classics such as Black Sabbath, Zed Zeppelin, Deep Purple, delta blues (Robert Johnson in particular), Joni Mitchell, Bauhaus, some country (Rodney Crowell, Emmilou Harris, Ralph Stanley)
it's getting long... way too long.
