Will anyone be making some upgrades? :p

I need to build a new system, my current one is showing its age.

I am thinking I will build a dual Clawhammer system, with around a GB of DDR333 or DDR400 memory, and a a nextgen graphics card. I am really looking forward to Matrox's new card, supposedly they are announcing it on the 14th. I was looking at some specs, it looks cool. If it does not live up, I will pick up Nvidia's latest offering. :)

You're kidding. This was you about a year ago:
    1Ghz Athlon
    512megs of RAM
    Abit KT7-RAID mobo
    GF1DDR Vidcard
    SB Live! X-Gamer
    12x DVD-ROM
    52x CDROM
    4x2x24 CDRW
    LS120 USB drive
    30gig 7200PRM IBM HDD
    Klipsch Promedia 4.1 Speakers
    Lnksys NIC
    Cable Modem

Likely you've upgraded some of that since then...

You're telling me that thing is showing its age? You must build a new system every year.

Here's what I just got in the mail today:
    GigaByte GA-8IRXP motherboard
    P4 1.8AGhz
512MB RAM (though this has yet to arrive from Crucial)
    Maxtor 40GB ATA 133 7200RPM HD
    Yamaha CRW3200EZ CDRW (24x/10x/40x)
    Visiontek Xtasy GEForce4 TI4400 128MB DDR AGP

DAMN dual Clawhammer system, you must be insane. Do you work in 3D design or something, cause those guys are the only ones who really need that......

Blackthorne I upgraded my vidcard to a GF3ti200, and I stuck in an additional 80gig drive, and I got a newer CDRW after that 4x crapped out on me.

And yes, I do need a Dual Clawhammer system. :D
The Clawhammer is AMD's next core for the desktop market. Its big brother, Sledgehammer, aka Opteron, is targetting the workstation and server market.

According to AMD's latest roadmaps, they plan on killing the Duron. Then they will move the Throughbred, and maybe Barton, into the lowend market. Clawhammer will assume the Athlon moniker, possibly Athlon-64, and take over the desktop market. Sledgehammer, under the Opteron name will target the workstation and server market.

I oughta smack anyone buys a P$. You must have a LOT of cash to burn. In all likelihood, I will be building my fully loaded Dual Clawhammer system for about the same price as a semi-loaded P$ system. :p

. . . I need to the AMD logo tattooed on my arm. :)

And you'll have a nice toasty house without having to buy an extra space heater as well! ;)

Clawhammers are not supposed to run as hot as the tbirds and Pally's do :p

The Tbred core will likely run much cooler, as it is a .13micron chip. The die size is only around 80mm^2. Not sure what the die size is on the Hammers yet :(

Edit - One more thing, I will not be able to build a new system at all for at LEAST 200 days. :( By that time, my aging Tbird setup will have outlived its usefulness. Just look at the reccomended sysreq for newer games right now. 800Mhz proc, GF2/Radeon with 32 meg of Video RAM. 256megs of system RAM. Jeez, I remember when such a system was top of the line. :)

[IMG] Beeing a hardware junkie myself I have now realised that it is simply unfinanciable to keep the comp always up to date. I have therefor decided to keep my components at least 1 1/2 - 2 years ... :D ... oh well :mommy: however, a dual processor comp is a nice thing to have ... would perfectly fit my GF-3 :(

    /me drools ...

I have a roguely two year old a 650MHz Athlon, 320 MB RAM and a GF-3 w 64MD-DDR ... should work for a while ... for my next upgrade in a year or a half I'll have to accept nothing below 1,8 GB to ensure that I'll have some two more years of peace ... :(

you're right BTA, and you don't just not need a heater - the ventilator fans will give your home the lovely atmosphere of a biplane cockpit ... well, even my old 650 MHz is relatively noisy, considering two of them :mommy: ... I think at some point you have to switch over to liquid cooling or install a 5.000 $ anti-sound sys in your separate comp room with separate air condition and continuous emergency power supply :D

[IMG] I just looked at the req's and I should be OK. This is a good thing for me. I had to wait a long time to play BG2. I won't have to wait for NWN.

I will buy a whole new computer before NWN comes out. Don't know the exact specs yet, but it will probably the best that is on the market.

    [IMG] Bleh! you're obsessed :p

Here's my specs: celeron 600, 128 MB SDram, voodoo 4500 32 Mb PCI video card.

    Here are Morrowind's minimum requirements:
PentiumIII 500, 32 Mb DirectX 8.1 compatible video card (voodoo is not supported) and 128 ram for win98, 256 ram for winxp

And guess what, my system runs this game great :D Neverwinter's requirements are considerably less than Morrowinds so I don't think I'll have any trouble running it.

I always follow from behind, which works out pretty well. New hardware's prices drop incredibly after you wait for a while. But in about six more months I'm sure the time for me to upgrade will be close.

    I also have a pentium 133 box but that's another story :)

*thinks of the cooling system needed to keep dual AMDs cool*

I have my AthlonXP 1700+ and I'm perfectly pleased with it, and will be for a looong time(well maybe not). i do need more ram tho, I only have 128 DDR2100 and I desperately need a new vid car(I have to use a PCI 32mb card because my old comp, long story). I'll probably get a XTasy or Verto GeForce 4400 in the next month or so too.

Anyways, I think that dual processors, whether they be P4s or AMDs are just overkill--the speed of CPU's can't even be used to their fullest extent now..the waste on a dual CPU system would just be well, waste. Just my 2 cents.

Neverwinter Nights does support dual CPUs though. If you want to run a server and play the game on the same machine ;).

Vladimir Furey, you are running an XP1700 with 128megs of RAM? What is wrong with you? :p Dude, thats the reccomended minimum for win2k, and WinXP crawls like a snail with only a 128megs. XP likes its RAM almost as much as sailors love their rum. :p

BTW, I would be using both CPUs extensively. :p

Lmao, I'm on a PIII Pro 400, 128 SDR, 32 gigs and no graphics card... And BG, BG2, PS:T, IWD and Dungeon Siege all run perfectly on my hunk-o-junk :D

When NWN comes out, it too will run perfectly... Or else end up smashed against the handiest wall...

Got news for you herf, you need a graphics card :p Where are you plugging your monitor in with out a graphics card? :p

BTW, you will need a decent 3D Accelerator card for NWN.

Yeah, i'm upgrading to 384 and later to 512DDR--probably in about a month when i get the vid card. :) I still use win98--simply because building a new system(i built this one in march) took precedent over upgrading my windows

    Oh, I see. You have my pity. Win98 . . . .ack.

Just remember that Win98 does not effectively use over 128 megs of RAM. It will make a difference in games, but not in the windows environ itself. Win2k 4ever :)
