[IMG] Or as close as you can get nowadays...

Hey all! I am flying out to Rome today for a little sightseeing, poking around and general meandering...I can't wait to get there! The Roman Empire is one of my favorite periods of History, so I'm excited about walking through the streets of Rome, trying to picture what it was like at the height of the Empire's glory...

So, as I start packing (I know, I am totally procrastinating!) Where are your favorite vacation spots? Or just favorite places to travel in general?

And, if anyone's interested in meeting up for a pint or five (or will it be wine in Italy?) Let me know....If not, seeya in about 2 weeks! :D

I was always a Roman Republic kind of guy myself, but a city a city. Give Cela's tomb a pat for me "the best of friends and worst of enemies." Have a great trip. Alas that pint will have to wait until you visit the US.

Hands down, I'd say my favorite spot to visit is French Polynesia. The water there is...well, you know how you occasionally see postcards and think, "whoa, that photographer must have waited a long time to get that shot." Well, in Tahiti, it just looks that way all the time. Plus, no computers (and if you bring one people look at you funny), no internet, no chance that your mobile phone is going to work...

    <sighs>

Have a great time in Italy! And yes, it is definitely wine! No pints allowed.

I remember having a picture book of some of the great sights of Rome. It had the photos of places like Collosesium (spelling must be wrong, sorry) covered with a transparency on which was added the original look. The glory and the ruins in one book... Sort of made u realise that the modern Rome is really nothing like that old one. U wouldn't know what a pizza tastes like if u only had a chance to sample the leftover stale crumbs, would u?
Still Italy is probably one of the best countries to visit as a tourist, especially if u have about a year to walk around sighseeing, I guess that's why the real adventuring is gone, nobody walks on foot from Rome to Rubikon anymore. Have a great time, Sir Bel :)

And as far as picture perfect beaches go, come to Australia, u won't get much better than tropical Queensland :) Corals, rainforest and all the crocodiles u can handle and the white sand and crystal clear water...

[IMG] Well...I am flying back tomorrow...I am pretty sad about it too! Rome was fantastic! The art, architecture, food, and the beautiful italian women! Which, I might add, are shy as hell...I guess that's why the italian men need to over-compensate. I am going to miss it a lot!

Another thing I like about traveling is meeting new people...Is it just me, or are Americans generally more pleasant when in Europe, or do they just identify better with other English speakers overseas?

I've probably met 3 dozen Americans and 4 or 5 people from England and Ireland, and I've had a blast with all of them...I think we (I mean, me, as a Yank examining his life at home while on holiday) rush around waaaay too much in the States!

I can't tell you the last time I sat in a park, or in this case on the SPanish Steps, or Fontana Trevi, and just watched people and hung out with them, or sang with them, or did nothing but talk...I wish it was more like that at home. Hell, it's hard to find one night each week for everyone to get together for a beer to catch up, and I've done it twice here with perfect strangers!

I need to remember that for when I get home...Well, so much for the "Thursday Afternoon Before I Leave For Home Rant!" :D

I popped in to check up on the boards...Mostly because it's been raining off and on today, so I thought I'd get in out of the rain...Plus, as odd as it seems...I kinda missed babbling incessantly on the message board.

    So...Have I missed anything?

I think when u r overseas every person that speaks your language becomes instantly interesting and somehow attractive to you. I'm not sure what happens if u go to another English speaking country, u will probably only identify with your own countryman. I'll probably be very excited to see any Australians in Europe, human social behaviour is so funny sometimes... I mean do u get extatic to see an American while u r in America? Nope, there's millions of them around, and u don't care for most of them at all at any given time. But travel a day on the plane, and u get sentimental about every little thing and every person that belongs to your home country. Don't take it personally, sir Bel, I'm exactly like that myself.

There's a chance I'm travelling to Ireland pretty soon, and I know there's quite a few people from there. Anybody wants to get together? I will be flying through London and possibly stuck there for a whole day, if anybody wants to give me a tour u r most welcome :)

[IMG] Meeting in Ireland for a real pint o' Guiness sounds like a good call!! Maybe I'll fly over there after I get my tax return!

How long is the flight Lo? Do you fly east or west? Or would it be South? Do they fly over the South Pole? I guess that WOULD be quicker! (I had to let go of the linear thought process to come up with that!!!)

About the only exotic place I've ever been to is my second cousin's drawing room. Ick.

As I've only been out of the U.S. three times (every one of them to Canada), I don't think that I would be much of an authority on travel, but I'd like to go to Ireland and Greece.

I've done a bit, but hopefully I have a lot more travelling to do in the future...I've been to: Scotland, Wales & England, Finland, Ukraine, Russia, France, Mexico, Canada (and Quebec) and Italy...

I've also been to about 25 of the 50 states. Traveling is fun! I definitely enjoy meeting new people and seeing all the places I've read about!
