Avarahtar if I had 2! possibilities I would say I had 1 in 2 chance of getting the right order. Should it of course be 1 in 1? :1eye:

DRSW: Imagine you have one 10-sided die one 9-sided one 8-sided etc. Place them in a line and see how many combinations you can get. The first can be in 10 positions, The first two can be in 90 positions (like two percentage dice in PnP). And three dice of course in little less than 1000 positions.

Instead in your example; you have 10 places(dice) each with 15 possibilities (15-sided die to begin with)
    Which is 15x14x13x12x11x10x9x8x7x6=897.286.400 possible solutions.

Think about it and look back to Avarahtar's post too if it helps :)

yeah - should be 15!/5!, as above... (rather than just 15!)

ArchAngel, hehe. I meant the odds are 1:1 307 674 367 999. Meaning there is one correct order and 10 307 674 999 wrong ones. I confused probability notation with odds there. At least I think that's how it goes. Haven't taken Finite in a few years.

    Ok it's finaly friday. :D

No theres no "real" answers to this. But their are some items that are just a waste to think about.

Box of matches: Uterly usless. Theirs no air on the moon. You could use the air tanks to try and light them on fire to do what ArchAngel did. But theirs a problem with that. You first would have to open the air tanks then use some thing with a rough surface to light the match. Lighting it by the oxygen would cause a small explosen by the opening that could and probley would burn the glove off you hand. And dont even try to shot it with a the .45 pistols.

Food concentrate: What would you need it for? You cant open you suit to eat. Any ways 200 miles isnt that much. It would take about 24 hours. You could very well make it to the ship intime. The only place I can see it beening used is in side the ship that crashed landed. Eat their and rest before making the trip.

50 feet of nylon rope: Now I'm not sure if theirs any big creaters to scall down but the rope could be used as a harness to pull other items.

Parachute silk: This could be used to drag sruff in. Also it could be used as a shadeing divice.

Portable heating unit: Not important unless your space suit heating water stoped for some reasion.

Two .45 caliber pistols: Cant be used. You need air to light the spark thats trigers the explosen that fires the bulit. The most it would do is the bulit would slid out and hover their and not really go anywere.

One case deydrated milk: You cant eat. See Food concentrate.

Two 100-pound tanks of oxygen: A must! Your going to have to refill your air in your space suit a few times. You might run out of air in the tanks. But deffently need these.

Stellar map: Not really needed. It would help if you were on the dark side of the moon but only when your facing away from the sun. It wouldnt even work on the earth side.

Life raft: Could be used to drag things. But that would only be good if theirs no sharp rocks pointing out. But you could use it for shelter from the sun.

Magnetic compass: Usless. The earths magnetic feld would over power the moons. It's really usless.

5 gallons of water: Usless. You drank before you leave to ship.

Signgal flares: Again no air. Dont waste time thinking aobut it.

First-aid kit containing injection needles: You have a space suit on remember? You would have to take off your suit.

Solar-powered FM receiver-transmitter: The second best thing next to the air tanks. This can be used to tell the mother ship where you are or what happened to you and keep them up dated to where you are.

Now you can all surive on the moon! Happy moon walking!

You people arent being creative enough.

    1. Oxygen (obviously)
    2. Food (though there is dispute over usability, I am assuming it is.)
    3. Water
    4. Map (to know where i'm going.)
5.6.7.8. Take the raft, use the rope to make the Parachute into a sail. Next take your guns and fire them down to give you lift, once in the air use the solar winds to propel you to safety.
    9. The heating unit (For warmth)
    10. Radio (to communicate with ship.)

    The rest are usless

    11. Milk (Ok, but not nessisary)
    12. Flares (no air)
    13. Med kit (no way to apply to self)
    14. Compass (unusable)
    15. Matches (no air!)

    Ok a few points.
There is too little atmosphere on the moon to allow for any kind of sail based device. I don't know much about the solar wind, other than that it's a stream of electromagneticaly charged particles ejected from the sun, but I don't think it'll have the effect you describe.
Stellar map: out of curiousity, why wouldn't it work facing the Earth? I would have thought astronomers have compiled star maps from every possible angle on the earth, and the moon's so close as to make little difference. Is it to do with reflected light from the earth?
First aid kit: it might *just* be possible to inject yourself through the suit, then bandage the needle in place so it doesn't fall out and cause your suit to depressurise. I was also thinking of using dressings to repair possible suit tears, but then I remembered that such things are generally breathable.
Pistols: You didn't specify that they were standard design pistols. They could have had their own cylinders of compressed air or something. Still can't figure out a use for them though.

    Lookey what I found: http://www.mv.k12.wa.us/science/integrated/MarsProject/Down2Moon.htm
Read that to see how a "NASA expert" ranked the items.

I believe DRSW's incorrect assumption about no stars on the "dayside" of the moon stems from the inability to see stars on the dayside of the earth due to the scattering effect of sunlight in the atmosphere.

BTW, gunpowder carries it's own oxygen which is why I wasn't sure if the flares would work or not.

    [IMG] HAH! Noble MacGyver :D

I knew I was on to something with that sneaky raft, it even had C02 bottles that I didn't know of! I am sure I could have rocketed my way to the mothership, without breaking sweat.

NASA just missed the point of the flares. Distress Signal??? It's called celebration flares, baby.

I've just figured something out for the pistols. Let's start with asking why I've got them. NASA must be issuing astronauts with guns. Now why would they do that? Possibly they're very jumpy about traitors, spies, etc. So maybe the mechanical difficulties were not all they seem. So - Interrogate the crew, find the sabotuer and threaten him or her into undoing the damage done.

Great Idea Ironbeard. I hope the crashlanding was soft enough to mend the saboutage. Lets just hope that the saboteur took the other gun while we crashed.

I am suspecting Headbanger to be the saboteur. Of course, Sir Bel seems sneaky too. Perhaps the magnetic compass he is fiddling with is a KGB-transmitter. :D
