What is the best level to dual class from either a mage to a cleric or vice versa? Which of these ways is better. I suppose starting as a cleric is easier as you can wear armour and get more hit points per level. Ant thoughts.

 

I would probably dual after 5 cleric levels, as you get animate dead which is a huge boost (though I am playing with Easytutu so I am not sure if it is the same as the original version). Though in my opinion, a multiclass Cleric/Mage is much better.

 

I just started, but I was going to use easy tutu. Been thinking about it for a while. Just got the DVD pack with BG1, ToTSC, BG2, ToB. Plus added a few MODs as well. Might as well install easy tutu. What class mage is good. I was thinking Illusionist.

 

I have always preferred Necromancer but I think that it is more aimed at BG2 since the better necromancy spells come into play there.

Illusionist is the best specialist class if you don't have another arcane caster in your party.
If you have another spellcaster who can cast identify conjurer is the best school.
You cannot dualclass to specialist wizard in BG2.

Level5 is the optimal level for dualing in BG1, but I'd consider dualing at level9 in BG2 instead.
In BG1 cleric is the most useful class, so you can keep him pure and if you dual at level9 at the start of BG2 you get more HP and the "raise dead" spell.

A powergamer would prefer a multiclass gnome cleric/illusionist for getting both cleric and mage HLAs in ToB.

 

I'd pick the multiclass over dual...less powerful early on but mid-late game they come into their own. This is more true in BG2 than BG1. However, the problem with dualling in BG1 is that (assuming you start with cleric, which you should IMO) you'll only get your cleric abilities back very late on, so you won't be able to enjoy it more. However, I always play demihumans and love multiclassing, so I'm biased.

 

Sometimes it is fun to play a PC made just to play in BG1 with no intentions of playing it in BG2. I have played many games with the thought of only using the PC in BG1. And I liked it.

 

I would play a mult-class Gnome Mage/Cleric. I played with my character like this until I got to BG2 and got bored because of how powerful he was with casting spells. He could cast all night and day and never run out.

 

It kinda sucks to dual class a pc in BG1 with plans for running it in the BG2 series. You will usually want to dual at a high level so your pc dual class will be strong in both classes, so you will end up playing a single class in BG1 unless you have some mods installed.
