How many times a week, month or even a year do you use Disk Cleanup, Scan Disk, or Defragment your hard drive???? Also, what OS are you using?
I'm running Win2k Professional, and I use disk cleanup, and I defrag. it once every week or so...

 

Disk Cleanup about once a week on average.

ScanDisk and Defragger, almost never. They never seem to work for me.

I also use Lavasoft's Adaware to delete spyware on my system.

Lastly, OS: Windows ME.

 

Windows ME. I run Norton WinDoctor, Speedisk, and Disk Doctor about once a week.

 

With Windows ME you pretty much HAVE to use optimization tools every week. Sorry, but ME sucks.

I scan/defrag/cleanup once a week and I do a complete format about once a semester and once during the summer.

I use a virus checker whenever i remember too and have it scan new files all the time. Like TBR scan disk and defrag never seem to work for me either. I do 'need' to defrag my computer soon but i have a 27 Gb hardrive
On a related note does anyone know how to revert to an earlier version of direct x? I need to know as my friend (who is now on holiday and out of contact) told me this might solve some of the 32 module problems/crashes (kernel32, shell 32 etc) i've been having.

Until this week my 2/15 year old computer had never been defragged (told me not needed), only ever used scandisc after crashes.

This week scandisk about 20 times and the bastard is still crashed. It re-wrote some of my system files to a bad sector at the end of the disk when I installed directX 8.1 for Morrowind.... BOLLOX! So having repaired the whole thing painstakingly it's still not working. Oh, well. I'll give it to my techies at work tomorrow, but I've a horrible feeling I'll need to start afresh with a new HD.

Well I use linux. I'm using a journalling file system with it (ext3). And as such, I never use defrag tools as it never gets defragmented. Never use scandisk as the journaling avoids any data corruption whatsoever. Don't check for virii as there are virtually none on linux. Naturally no disk cleanup either. And best of all, it almost never crashes!!

Well I also have a win98 SE partition which is just empty except some games that'll only run under windows. That's the only purpose it serves. So I call it Wintendo It still manages to crash a lot though due to some driver conflicts and DX etc. I think it is time defragged it. Last time I did it was like 6 months ago I think.

Currently I'm playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein & Fallout 2 under linux and Morrowind under windows. I believe NeverWinterNights will have a linux version. YAY!

 

I'm never use disk cleanup, scan disk or defrag my hard drive. Why bother, it takes a lot of time and I never get the impression my computer is any faster.

Why, you look like you're ready for some serious OS dissing
If you ask me, there is only one OS that's better than linux (by Linux, I don't mean Redhat, Mandrake, Suse etc. I mean Slackware, Gentoo and the like distros). That being FreeBSD. But Linux garners more attention, has more drivers and runs and compiles more software than BSD (since they're basicly written for Linux) I prefer linux over it.

 

I have Win98, never defragmented my 30GB harddrive that has 6 GB for windowses and rest is for "fun". I formated my HDD when i bought it almost 2 years before. He is a bit slower but i still manage to live with it. I keep shareware to minimum, but it still has its bugs (OS). Its seems i cant install Visual Studio (or only C++)!

 

Windows XP Pro and Windows 98 SE

There's no normal scandisk here. Never defrag, never disk clean. I've also forgot to install any antivirus software. I want to learn Linux.

 

I have yet to defrag my harddrive and I have had my computer for almost four years. I do the others when i feel that the computer needs them.

 

I don't think you ever need to use Defrag unless you have a 5400 rpm or slower hard drive.

Scandisk only if I had to hard reset my computer or after adding/removing computer parts.

Is it just me or does Win XP SUCK?!? When I had it on my computer, (for a week) I was constantly finding buggs, errors, and other stuff that started bugging me. And whats up with it's "new" look? Looks like a child designed and colored it. XP truly is windows on training wheels!!!

 

I've had windows XP running for over 9 months now with almost no problems at all on what has been, in general, a very problematic computer.

Yes the interface appearance sucks, but it can be changed back to the original.

Invoker: have you tinkered with Transgaming's latest version of WineX yet? I'd like to know when it'll be safe to forever throw away windows.

Yeah in fact I'm following winex from cvs. It looks very good but still has a long way to go.

<rant> But the linux gaming problem can't be solved that way imo. It'll just cause game developers to disregard linux even more. Why should I play the games with an extra layer of apis converting directx calls to opengl causing it to run a bit slower. I think companies should start their projects with portable codes like id software or bioware with NWN. Otherwise it'll be like OS/2. It emulated windows even better than windows itsself Who remembers OS/2 now </rant>

Well, for now we still need that win partition

 

Well i remember OS/2 but never liked it.

BTW. does defragmenting of HDD frees some space on it? I think it does but never actually noticed any aditional free space.
