Here is where I make all of you long-distance commuters jealous.

My house is MUCH less than a mile from my office - it takes me about two minutes to walk, one if I walk quickly.

(Got lucky and found an apartment that is across the street from the side of the campus that my building is on!)

I would nominate 101 and 880 between San Jose and SF/Oakland, respectively, as the worst sections of freeway in the known universe. Thank goodness I don't have to use those. :)

    @dmc
One thing I noticed about LA freeways (the few times I've ventured to Lala land) is that they seem to be crowded at all hours of the day. Otherwise, yes, I would vote for Bay Area freeways as worse during commute hours--not a contest anyone really wants to win. :o

It takes me about 45 minutes to drive to my uni from where I live (a little less if it's not early in the morning, when everyone goes to work). The trip is less than 20km, but since I can't park anywhere near the uni (since it's in the city centre, and has practically no grounds), I have to park pretty far away, so it takes me another 15 minutes to walk to the uni. All in all, it takes me about an hour to get there from home.

My apartment is about 2 blocks (no more than a few hundred feet) from the uni, so it's a five minute walk. Surprisingly enough, it's about 20 minutes minimum if I try to take my car in.

Math, DR: No doubt, Faragon means these cameras that get your car/numberplate on picture when you cross pass them when you're driving too fast. ;) We call them Flasherpole (or Flitspaal) here. What do you people call them? Just Cameras?

    OnTopic:
8 Minutes to school by bike.
5 minutes to work by bike.
Home-Ede to Home-Zwijndrecht is about 2 hours (Mesmero's earlier mentioned Traindelays are not included)

DR - Don't forget the oil industry, of course. We are in its hometown, so mass transit is considered evil, along with zoning(the more efficient, the more it is hated here). Big business runs our city, which is why everything is in shambles, except the nice new areas where all the new pork-barrel stadiums are located (notice: they have a train, all 2.5 miles of it).

I still remember when Ken Lay (Enron moron) was running all over the city with Lee Brown (former mayor, and big business lackey) selling everyone on Enron stadium, while Fastow and Skilling were back at the office downtown running his company into the ground for him, and finding him a new home at Folsem Prison. I could rant on about our "fair" city, but I'll stop ranting now.
Oh, I live about 30 miles from where I work, and drive is about 40 minutes on a "normal" day. But I don't spend nearly what you do, DR. Maybe about half that. Wow, that's a lot.

Edit - I was corrected by a third party on my post, the new train runs on a 7 mile track - cost: 1 BILLION dollars. Yep, for 7 friggin' miles of track.

    5 minutes. On foot. :D

Probably about 100 meters directly to the grounds, a fair bit more to the buildings.

My university is about 20km away from where I live, but it takes a whopping 90 minutes (max) to get there by bus! (The minimum is 75 minutes)

By car it takes 25-50 minutes, depending on rush hour or not, but I don't drive there.

So curses to the bus system, their routes and transferring.

    At best:

5 minutes walk and waiting for the bus to start.
    20 minutes ride.
1 minute to get up there.

26, sort of. A few times even less, I think.

Sometimes, however, much over an hour. It sucks especially when there's an accident on the bridge nearby and not only the crashed cars, but also the cops' cars block the way.

About a 5 minute bike ride for me, or a one minute drive, or about a 20 minute walk.

About a 5 minutes walk or less. Just from the dorms to the building that I need.

I don't think they have those things over there. IIRC they have speed control in their cars, just like the trucks in Europe.

Public transport is a b***h! In the morning I take 2 hours to get to university provided that the train is on time. If it isn't, it might be 3 to 4 hours. Coupled to that, I take three trains in the morning and if one is late, all are late. There have been instances when I've been contemplating murdering some train officials.

On an average day though I travel 4 hours and a total of 120 kilometres. I'ts not all bad though because sometimes when I don't feel like going to first lecture, I can always tell my lecturer that the trains were late!

If my class starts 9 in the morning I take the bus from home at 6am, the train leaves from the station 6:42 and arrives at the city of my university at 8:03, then I jump on the bus to school and is there 5 minutes later. Then I wait. It is reversed pretty much on the way home. So a 100km commute takes around 2-3 hours one way with waiting time. I have been doing that for three years, only one year left! Thank god that we only have class 1-3 times a week.

It's about 3.1 km away, and its 6 minutes on the bus. Although the bus driver is very inconsistant, once he came at 9:30, and we're supposed to be picked up at 8:05!

I love the dorm. First 5 mins on the elevator/stairs and then 2 mins to go across the yard :D

When I lived back home it used to take me 1,5 hours to go to school. It was "fun"... Bus leaving at 6.40 am and being back home around 16.40 p.m... and I was all of 13. *rolleyes*

Yep, love living in the city,. After all, even when I lived only 15 or so miles from my school a few years back, it still took an hour to get there via bus.
