I've just installed Baldur's Gate The Original Saga. The next thing I want to do is install the Baldurdash Text fixes and the FixPack. But when I try to install these, I get this message:

"A working installation of Baldur's Gate/Tales of the Sword Coast was not found. Aborting."

Has anyone got any idea what could be wrong and/or how to fix this problem?

Try executing the fixpack files inside the game's installation directory.

I tried that but it still came back with the same message.

I'm guessing that it's probably my Operating System. I have a Dell with Windows XP Media Center. Maybe there is something in that OS that is causing the Baldurdash self-extracting zip file to not recognize some flag or whatever.

If you have any other thoughts, I would like to hear them. Thanks for your suggestion.

Have you started Baldur's Gate? Sometimes some games create files and registry entries once they are run for the first time.

I think I've read somewhere that the installer reads the info in baldur.ini, which is filled out by the game when launching it for the first time.

Hmmm... I can't remember if I had started the game or not when I tried to install the fixpack. I'm pretty sure I tried to install the fixpack on a clean install of Baldur's Gate. But I'm not absolutely positive.

I've started playing the game by now. I'm almost finished with looting all the houses in Beregost (I've got Algernon's Cloak). ;) I've already started over once after I had already done the Gnoll Stronghold, the Nashkel Carnival, returned the Spider's body to Landrin, the Bassilus Quest, High Hedge, and the area NE of Nashkel where you get the two-handed sword + 1. I was getting ready to do the areas in the Southwest next (Xvart village and Captain Brage), when I read in a post here about a bugged trap in the area where you fight Davaeorn. It seemed like it was not possible to disarm the trap and it was suggested that the Baldurdash fixpack would correct the problem. So, (like the anal retentive person that I am :p ) I decided to re-install the game, install the Baldurdash fixpack, and start over.

I'm wondering if it is really necessary to play the game with the Baldurdash fixes because I really don't want to start over again only to find that the same problem that I'm having probably isn't going to be resolved anyway...

So, can someone tell me if I can play without the Baldurdash patches? I know they correct some exploits, but I don't take advantage of those anyway. I try to play the game without cheating as much as possible. ;)

I meant that try to run the game before installing the patch. And as far as I know, you can play the game well without the Baldurdash fixpack and without encountering that many bugs. At least as long as you have the latest official patch.

You can play the game just fine with only the official patch installed.

Yes, I have the 3 disk set that comes already patched. I am very happy to hear that I can play the game just fine without the Baldurdash fixes. Thank you very much! :)
