Once again, thank you all for your patience with my newbie questions! :)

So... never having gotten this far in the game before... I have pursued Sarevok to the Undercity, and after dying about 20 times came here and read lots of tips and strategies on how to get rid of him. In reading them I came up with a totally different question:

I haven't done any of the TotSC stuff yet. If I kill Sarevok, will the whole thing be over? And if that's the case... should I go do some TotSC stuff and go up a level or two; and if I do, will Sarevok still be waiting for me down there?

In other words; did I botch it all up? ;)

The game ends with Sarevok's death. As far as I can see you can't leave the Undercity (in fact once you enter the Ducal Palace you can't go back).

If you kill Savie the game ends.

You get an automatic save just before you enter the final room. You need to (re)start from here and finish all other quests. AFAIK he will stay there until you go and get him.

I'm sure I've left the undercity before - via the thieves guild.

IIRC you can leave the city too. So go do all the ToTSC quests, Sarevok is a patient guy.

    It's possible.

Now that I think about it when you install TotSC you get a 'finalsave' savegame that begins in Ulgoth's Beard.

I must confess that I've never tried this since when you begin the quest to defeat Sarevok time should be of the essence.

Time is not of the essence. You can leave Undercity as much as you want as long as you haven't entered the final room.

As far as I know, entering the temple where the battle with Sarevok takes place should put a Final-Save on your save directory. Then you can go to the main game screen, select Mission Pack, import that Final-Save and it'll take you straight to Ulgoth's Beard, where you can start playing the expansion's content.

After you finish it, you should get a message telling you it's all over. Then, all you have to do is go back to the undercity and kick Sarevok's ass once again. See you @ chateau Irenicus.

There is a spot on the left side of the city as I recall that you can leave the undercity. maybe that's been fixed by a patch or something. I played without any patches for a long time.

Reguardless from your final save and before your not stopped from leaving the undercity, the maze, or even Baldur's Gate itself to go back and finish up other things like the TotSC quests.

If you make a save in that final battle room then you'll have to use your final save instead.

What I meant is that time should be of the essence because it's really stupid that the game freezes and that Sarevok is patiently waiting for you to finish your tour of the Sword Coast.

Thank you all! I feel like a bit of a dork for not working that out beforehand.

However... I have been sorely, sorely tempted to install a couple of the smaller mods (like xp-cap remover) and start all over with a new party, soooo... this might be my golden opportunity. :)

Much obliged for all the helpful advice. :)

I tend to do different parts of the TotSC about the time you return to Baldur's Gate and are dealing with some of that but before the castle because it just seems to fit really well time line wise for me. So I understand it not seeming right.
