My party, which included Coran, had just finished killing the wyverns in the cave in the final section of Cloakwood, and I decided to try resting in the cave before continuing, since several of them, including Coran, had been badly wounded and healing spells needed to be replenished. Not a good idea, as it turned out! The (probably) predictable wyverns appeared in the middle of the sleep cycle and attacked. I paused the game and loaded the quick save I'd made before resting, but when it came up Coran was greyed out: dead. I loaded the title save, made earlier in the cavern. Coran was dead here, too. Nor was his equipment anywhere to be found. It had disappeared along with him.

    Obviously some kind of glitch.

What I think happened is that one of the wyverns who attacked us as we slept struck a blow that killed Coran, and for some reason this carried over into the re-load, making him dead. Why it should also carry over into the title save, and why his equipment should disappear as well, I've no idea.

Has anyone else had this sort of problem with the game?

Whenever something happens in my game that I don't like, I've found that immediately re-loading from a previous save doesn't always result in solving the problem in a satisfactory way.

Instead of immediately re-loading, quit the game and then re-start it. Then use the previous save when you re-start the game. That has fixed my problem. It may be the solution to your problem, also. Let's hope so.

Thanks, Nyssa, but too late. The party's moved on and I've replaced Coran with Yeslick. Next time, though.
