Emmanuel Goldstein is a character in George Orwell's novel 1984.

    ****Novel spoilers

Every day, citizens of the totalitarian regime gather for a "two-minute hate". A video of Goldstein arguing against the ruling party is played and the citizens are expected to hate him, screaming abuse at the screen etc. He is believed to be the leader of a subversive movement known as "the Brotherhood". Towards the end of the book, the main character starts to suspect that Goldstein isn't a real person and that both he and the Brotherhood were invented by the party to give the people a target for their dissatisfaction.

    ****end spoilers*******

  I should have remembered. I was thinking talking about Goldstein meant an Australian or American politician, which I should know, but don't know. :D

    I didn't think about books.

I only know Bin Laden as the "phantom menace". Which brings me right back to the topic of the thread. Who cares. Bin Laden who ? Did he acutally play any important role at all. Or is he just the same as the Iraqi-Information-Minister, speaking loud on the television as like a PR-spokesperson, whereas plans are made without him, therefore a replacable figure.

Yes, I think he is. Meaning: What's his role in Al-Queda. Or in other words, is he the "boss". Can Al-Queda work withhout him ?

I heard it in the radio about Saudi-Arabia, this morning.

Bottom line: I think Al-Queda does not need Osama Bin Laden to do what they do. They have others.
