    Only the two for me.

English, and I pride myself with my skills in English as well.

Japanese. I've been learning it since grade 5. I'm now at the end of grade 11.

I have an interest in German, but the only place I will be able to learn it is in Uni. That and im thinking perhaps arabic. And cantonese.

Ooops, I accidently chose one, i meant two. Well I'm not totally fluent but I think 12 weeks of Honors Spanish I qualifies a little. High school classes rock... usually.

Hmm, I seem to be the only person on these boards who speaks Welsh or, as we say in the Land Of Song, "fi yw'r unig berson yma sy'n siarad Cymraeg". I also speak French and Spanish. Not all Britons are monoglot idiots. I can't compete with the Scandinavians, Dutch, Belgians or Swiss, though.

    Fluently: Finnish and English
    Somewhat: Swedish, German
    Just a little: Spanish
    Just started: Russian
I'm also hoping to start studying Japanese sometime in the near future.

Learning languages in Finland is nice because you're obliged to learn Finnish, Swedish and English in school at a pretty early stage. Most people also take extra languages on top of that.

Je ne parle pas le francais, um, well.

I said two, I can easily speak english fluently, and I can speak French better than most people I know, and we all had to take it grades one through nine! So I can speak it, if absolutely neccesary.

English first, by birth not choice.

Chinese, because it is the most commonly spoken language.

Urdu/Hindi, because it is spoken in my wife's country and because it is the second most commonly spoken language.

Arabic, because I need it, and because it is also in the worlds top 10 languages.

Learnt Korean for 3 years but I am too hopeless.

I also dream of knowing German, Spanish, Italian, Swahili, Turkish, Farsi, Thai and whole bunch of other real and artificial languages. I am a polyglot.

Gotta add this joke for all the European friends. (A Czech told me this sad, lame joke.)

    Q. What do you call a person who speaks one language?

    A. A polyglot.

    Q. What do you call a person who can speak two languages?

    A. Bilingual.

    Q. What do you call a person who speaks one language?

    A. American.

Clearly the above posts and the poll prove otherwise...

What a surprise to see 'German' in so many posts up there! Who would have guessed.

The languages I speak fluently are German, of course, and English - to a degree. It would help if I were to actually use it in conversations more often. Time for some traveling, me thinks. If only I had the money. :(

They tried to force French on my poor mind, but even after 4 years of prolonged torture I failed miserably. Mysterious.

I chose Japanese for a semester. Got quite far in it and fared better than with French. :D But to say I speak it would be quite the disgrace to this nice language. Romanji, for all insiders.

[IMG] English, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, German, Russian and Arabic.

Is this an exaggeration? You bet it is!
I've studied Russian and Arabic, but I remember almost nothing of it.
As for Norwegian, Danish and German I understand what is being said well enough, but can't really speak those languages. So what does that leave me with? Right you are, swedish and english. Oh well, it looked good first, didn't it? :)

(Apologies to all German board members. I couldn't resist this, I just couldn't).

[IMG] Our economy depends somewhat on our German neighbours, so it would be wise to add some words to your vocabulary, like bloderwichser and arschloch (2xSP)

    [IMG] Do not worry, Chris.
Most Germans will expect just that kind of humour from a Brit. ;)

    @ MoN
You got the spelling quite right. But its 'blöder Wichser'. :o
