I had my first DM session yesterday

    And it went great. We three semi-veterans and one rookie. It contains a lot of combat but they seemed to like it so I'll try to have at least moderate combat. They are in the Icewind Dale and is level 3 at the moment. I am letting them face hard opponents, they have been under 0 HP at least seven times each, and it's great fun. Just wanted to post this, needed to brag a bit. :D

    It has been a while since I last DMed, but I'm starting again in probably two weeks. I still need to do a bit of preperation, but on the other hand, I can't wait to start again.

    Velve, did your players start at level 1? If they went from level 1 to level 3 in one gaming session, don't you think that it's a bit quick? Letting them face hard opponants is great, but harder opponents gives them more xp. Have you thought about lowering the amount of xp they can get by killing an enemy? When I was a player, the DM read the xp table wrong and we got too much experience points, which made us level up to quickly. It just wasn't fun anymore.

    They began at level 2, not one. I just had to let them get one level up so that they like the game. Most people like level ups and they are some of them.

    My first dming session went pretty bad as well, but know i think i've got the general idea.....the adventures are pretty fun now...I think.

    [​IMG] Like all things you get better with practice. I remember the first time I run a session. I had lots of problems as well. 18 years later I think I have it done but I'm still improving. There is no perfect DM everyone run get better and you should read up more, plan more and work with your players to improve the experience as much as possible.

    I tried to DM once, I turned out pretty well, they had to follow a group of gnome illusionists/thiefs into their cave. Lots of illusionary walls/traps.

    Actually, it seems that they like being in the group, so meaby I can DM a bit after all. :)

    DMing is fun. I've been playing with a group in my little town since 3rd edition came out. I was the only one willing to take the time to learn the rules and DM, as none of us knew anything about 3E D&D. Then it just stuck.

    The point is, I never liked actually playing as a result. Probably because no one else here knows how to DM any better than I did that first trainwreck of a time, and they're used to my methods. It takes practice.
