[IMG] I am currently playing through this great game for the first time. I'm in Chapter 9, and I'll probably start a new game at once when I'm finished. I think I'll be playing only BG2, but I may install tutu for a longer adventure with more character options. I want to play a fightertype with a one-handed weapon and a shield. Which weapon proficiency and character class would you choose? (If any alignment is required, please tell me so) (Powergaming is not the top objective, just name a combination you enjoyed playing)

Considering I have not explored this game yet, I'd apreciate you not giving any spoilers.

With that I mean DON'T tell me the name, abilities or location of an item. I want the proficiency you'd like, not a big spoiler. If I really can't find it, or don't know where it is, I'll look for help later, but exploring the game for myself feels much better. (I know just about every combination is capable of finishing the game, but I'm looking for an entertaining one, not the most powerful one)

    Thanks.

I've always liked the kensai combinations. Like a Kensai/Mage, being a fighter/mage with a -2 (or about that) base AC. I like katanas and usually goes for them, but any other item you like will do just fine. Dual him/her at lvl 9 and you'd have grand mastery soon after regaining your kensai abilities. You should also put some points into single weapon fighting (at least 2).

I also like the kensai/thief, the proficiencies should still be used as mentioned above.

Wild Mages are also fun, but deadly as well (for you that is).

Sorcerers are neat too, and easy to play.

If you go with a kensai/thief then you'll have a formidable sneaks man when you get your kensai abilities back. With Grand Mastery in the weapon of your choice you will be able to deliver devastating blows on a backstab, while also being able to lay traps.

The Kensai/mage is fabulous, being able to buff himself with spells like stoneskin, spirit armor, absolute immunity, spell immunity. Cast time stop, and tear down enemy defences, all while he fights on the frontline.

Sorcerers are just neat because they get to cast so many spells, and they're quite easy to play, if you just think before choosing spells.

Wild Mages are just good 'ol fun. ;)

I think Kensai / Thief rules. Put proficiency points into any one handed weapon that qualifies for backstabbing (as that is the main attraction of this build).

Thanks for replying. I should perhaps have mentioned I meant a singleclass character. I was thinking perhaps a Kensai or Barbarian with katana and battleaxe, respectively. Even though there are stronger characters possible, I want to play this one-weapon fighter. I'll probably play this game so many times it doesn't really matter, and RP is the most important part (to me at least).

Kensai's a fine choice as a pure class too. Kai rocks, and you'll also get the fighters special albilities that way.

If you want a weapon/shield character, just note that Kensai can't use shields. If you don't mind skipping the shield, kensai can be fun, just make sure someone else can take hits for you.

For a character, I'd probably go with kensai or monk (if you're willing to skip the shield), or for something really different, try wizard slayer.

For a weapon, every type has good weapons, so whichever you pick you'll find something good eventually. Long swords are always a good choice, though there are some good bastard swords too. It really doesn't matter if you're not powergaming, just pick the weapon you like most.

Blades are fun (skipping the shield), a bit like a fighter/mage, melee and spells. Spells like stoneskin, blur, mirror image etc. more than make up for their defensive disadvantages and with Melf's minute meteors you avoid the hassle of dual-wielding and ranged weapons. Bards also have great lore, i.e. you don't have to waste as much coin/spells on identifying items, which is especially useful with missiles (arrows, bolts... ) as you can start using them immidietly.

A berserker with either an axe or a flail in both hands rock. I prefer two weapon style because you can use special abilities from two weapons in stead of one. And a fighter class because I don't like too much hassle before wading into melee. Go for a pure fighter with mastery in longswords or bastardswords if you like a classic fighter.
