I have a full install of SoA, over which ToB is installed. The *only* mod is the English Language fix by Baldurdash. I am using a custom portrait and custom soundset.

Every kind of save, no matter where it is or when it's done, minimizes the game and gives the "your save game failed, quit?" warning. I can't play! What could be causing this?

Which version of Baldurdash? There are separate ones for SoA and ToB, and if you installed the SoA one over ToB (or the ToB one before SoA, for that matter), that could cause some problems.

¿Do you burn the savegames in a CD? Maybe the files are protected against the write. You must modify the properties of the files.

Before Baldurdash, you need to install TOB official patch.

The correct installation order (for the English version of the game) is this:

    SOA + TOB + (TOB official patch_26498_English) + (Baldurdash TOB fixpack_112)

From what you wrote, it seems that you have missed TOB official patch.

Felinoid: I did the ToB patch. Not the Baldurdash fixpack, just the English Language fix.

    Tardazor: Nope.

Sikret: I applied the official patch first.

What I can recommend is a new installation of the game.

    1- Uninstall the game.
2- If your mods and patches are in the main BG2 folder, cut and paste them to some other place.
3- Delete the entire content of your BG2 main folder.
4- Install the game and patches. Follow the formula I gave you in my previous post:
5- Afterwards, make a backup copy of the BG2 folder and keep it somewhere else. You can zip the backup as well. This will help you to quickly return to a clean installation whenever needed in the future.

I just hope that there is nothing wrong with your original CDs. If the game's CDs are damaged nothing can be done.

Darn. Full re-install, then the official patch, same problem. No mods or custom anything.

Could a broken disc cause this?

You're from Italy... do you actually have the English version of the game, or are you trying to apply the English patches/fixes to an Italian version of the game? Which would most likely explain everything...

    I have the English version.

A "recommended" install works and plays fine, whereas the full install doesn't. This is good because it means proves that it is some sort of disc problem, but it's bad because it proves that it's some sort of disc problem.

No ToB for me, I guess.
