[IMG] I finally got BG2:TOB to load up and play. However it's running very slow and makes it all but unplayable. *sighs*

Any suggestions on how to speed it up? I do have the offical patch, baldurdash, and weidu mods, including a few new kits.

    :flaming: :bang:

    Buy a new computer ? :)

When I played BG2 on Pentium 166 (or was it 233 ? ah hell, who cares) several years ago, I've deleted most things from hard disc to clean up space, merged all 'logic' disks into one, turned all local\internet connections off and killed most of the processes. It worked ! :D

First, reduce all graphic to minimum, then play only single player. About frame rate, give me some information about your PC.

Cripes this makes three of us that have choppiness! On mine, I lowered the graphics to minimum but it was still choppy. Also, it was working just 2 weeks before it went like this.

I suggest you tell something about your system specs.

I never experienced anything like what you mentioned.

BG-2 is extremely undemanding a game for today's standards. Looking at my game's cover requirements are flimsy 266+ MHz, 64 MB RAM and an, geez, 8x CD-ROM.

So what is your CPU? What size is your RAM? What graphics card do you have? What about your HDD speed? How much disc space left? Ever defragmented? What OS? Do you use drive compression? What about processes running in the background eating up performance? How old is your comp?

I beat all of those requirements, probably by a long-shot. I've got about 5 gigs left, defragmented recently, use WinXP, used drive compression recently (that's the thing in the Disk Cleanup right?), never have anything running in the backround and my comp is about 1 and a bit years old.

Computer is three years old, I defrag and I'm due for the monthly defrag session (will be more than likely this weekend... a trip to the ER threw off my scheduale). CPU? off hand I can't think. Graphics card, same. I'm running FAT32... I have a 40 gig HD w/ close to 20 gigs left. I'm running Windows XP w/ all the latest updates.

Point is, when you run WinXP on something like 650MHz with 256 MB RAM windows alone will require most of the performance your comp has. You need plenty of RAM for XP, it's a 'fat' program.

I have not enough information to help to explain your problem atm.

Point, is, you *could* have a look in your control panel and find out what comp you have :)

Just three or so mouseclicks away: Control Panel --> System ... voila ... and you have RAM and CPU speed. Having a look at the device manager and the display adapter should tell you what graphics card you have.

Post somethig like that and I'll know more:
    -CPU: Athlon XP 3000 MHz
    -Memory: 512 MB DDR-RAM
    -graphics: GF-3 Ti-200 (64 MB SD-RAM)
-HDD: 80 GB, 7200 rpm - space remaining
    -OS: Win2000 SP-3

But you see, with my problem it's worked before for over a year, and for some of that even less ram than I have now (256 then, 384 now). It's just all of the sudden it's all choppy.

Tried that yesterday. It reduced the choppiness a little bit but it's still really bad.

Same here. It was working fine, then I had to reinstall because I goofed with some mods. Now it's doing a bit better when I put it in window mode, but still choppy. *sighs*

And, I have to admit that I won't be doing any major changes to the PC or to BG2 right now because i have 800mgs of advil and 1000mgs of vicodin running through my system right now.

To quote Bill Engvall: "Hello, Vicodin Land!"

I remember there's an option in WinXP that allows you to play the game in Windows98 or 95 mode. Try to avoid using either modes. (I forgot which of the other modes is the right one though. Been a while since I changed switched from WinXP)
I once experienced the same amount of choppines when I swtiched it to one of these modes.

Try downloading enditall from the internet then run it to cut down on the things running in the background on Windows XP. You wouldn't believe the number of things running in the background in XP

What about your graphics card or drivers? I remember on my previous system (but I still have the same card, alas), it was almost too fast in software mode but hardware mode was too slow to play for whatever reason.

Turn off the quasi-3D acceleration if you have it on.

I tried re-installing again but I didn't put any mods in, just the Bioware patch and the Baldurdash patch. ToB is still slow as ever, but in the SoA part, I was able to beat Irenicus for the last time without any trouble with choppiness.

I had a fragmentation problem which was intermittant. It turned out to be caused by Norton acrrying out its routine Scans.

I suspect that you would have spotted such a simple error but are there any other sheduled tasks which could be cuttin in without you being aware?

I don't think I even have any scheduled tasks.
