They say that wild mages have some random effects when they cast spells. Which spells do they apply to? Also, are they suicidal, or are they actually powerful enough that people are willing to take the chance and kill themselves?

Check the ToB manual it lists 100 things that could possibly go awry when you cast a spell as a wild mage.

You don't have to roleplay your wild mage as crazy, just as a risky.

Wild mages are subject to wild surges anytime they cast a spell. The guide that comes with ToB lists all the random effects if a wild surge occurs during spell casting. I don't think they are suicidal nor do I think they are really any more powerful than any other mage since they cannot wholly affect surges. They do have a few spells that can, however, make the surges work more in their favor.

Has anyone ever played a Wild Mage?

They would make an interesting character to roleplay - but the fact that things can go awry in the heat of battle kind of turns me off.

I have played a wild mage and he was choatic good.

Well I should say "he" loosely. There was a time when he pulled an Edwin and turned himself into a female for awhile. :p

I started playing a wild mage, but never finished it. Nearly every time I cast a spell, a surge would turn me gold. If that didn't happen, my spell would be cast "5 levels lower". Kind of a pain. Maybe I'll pick it up again and see if I can ride it out.

Very crazy. Magic Missile gone wrong, suddenly a cow falls on them.

I like Wild Mages, because of their first level spell, Nahal's Reckless Dweomer. It allows you to cast any spell that you have in you book no matter if it is memorized or not. Of course there is a good chance that it won't work, but it is still really handy. Also, there are more good and neutral effects of a wild surge than there are bad effects, so it is rare that you kill yourself.

Wild mages are pretty good if you need some gold or magical weapons, coz in the ToB manual it says that some effects of the spell can get you god and magical stuff. But other then that I would stick to normal mages and sorcerers.

so if you want to take the chance of frying yourself and your teammates, then choose the wild mage? so you play the wild mage just like every other mage, but playing a game of chance? can you also dual class out?

I remember when my brother played a wild mage. He attempted to cast fireball and got a sex change instead!

All fine and good if you manage to get those results from the wild surge. Remember, it's random - you could just as easily end up creating birds or gating in a demon.

To use a wild mage solely for the chance of creating gold or weapons? And at the risk of losing a spell, or worse; a party member? To each his own, I suppose.

It's also important to note that wild mages get the bonus specialist spells without having to give up a spell school to get them.

Plus, you can get a time stop scroll into your book pretty early on. Casting that with Narhal's at a low level is pretty awesome.

I have found a few bugs with them, though. Including getting surges on every spell and always casting 2 levels lower.

Wild mages are difficult to play... I replaced the Ring of Ram with a ring working like ring of wizardy in bg1 (double 1st level spells).
Bored in it when in a fight with bandits first i got a cow on my head, reloaded, and in the next bandit fight i got a hostile nabassu and bandits at me.

Of course im not sure of this here little info

But After what i understand of WildMages, they
are among the only ones able to cast spells
    properly in (antiMagicfields/Surge Areas)

since they are used to it they have better control
    over it.

(well this is what ive heard (pen and paper wise)

But is it also true Computer wise ?

I have never played a Wildmage and doubt i will

im still recovering from my Theif and cleric
(all the way from bg1 to throne of blood)

    kinda gets alittle...Rudimentary.

and i dont like to begin in SOA with a character.
I want them from the begining of bg1!

    im crazy .
