Game crashes in Adalon's lair

I am prodigiously annoyed! I started getting error messages, sometimes crashing the game, sometimes the whole computer, when I first entered Adalon's lair in the Underdark. After many tries (although without ever seeing her) I finally managed to get the quest from her and head into the Drow city. Now after slaying beholders, deceiving pretty much everyone and eventually slaying almost everyone in the town (my stealing the eggs apparently revealed who I really was), I go back to her to get out only to have the game crash every time she tries to revert to her true form! Is there another way out, or a patch or something? I don't know if it's my lameo 3D card causing problems, if it's the install, the cd (which sometimes doesn't seem to read properly and tells me "please insert original CD" when I start the game), a memory problem (although I doubt that, I'm on an AMD 1Gig machine with 256 RAM), or something else. Can anyone help? I can't bear to be stuck here!

 

1. Did you install the final ToB patch?

2. Please post if you're running full install of SoA.

3. Try to lower graphics part in BG2config and see if that will let you pass the scene.

I believe I do have the full SoA install, but I don't have any patches (at least not that I can remember...I installed it ages ago but only really started playing a few years ago. I've tried changing all the graphics things but it still doesn't work. In fact, sometimes I don't even have to talk to Adalon for it to crash. I'm thinking that the area file is corrupted somehow, maybe a scratch on the cd or something.

Let me know about any patches or things that might help, or any other information I can give you!

I can only suggest reinstall.

And did you try what I said the other day in the chatroom? Delete contents from BG2 (sub)folders:
- cache
- temp
- tempsave

My game crashes when I try to start a new game and when I go to watchers keep - I think it crashes in Amkethran too

 

Do exactly what I've said in the post with BG2 subfolders.

If that doesn't help, check if there is any BIF file inside BG2 subfolders DATA and CDx that has length of 0 (zero). If there is such file, delete it! But in that case post which file it was.

 

I have followed your advice to no avail - my game is still completly and utterly... not working

 

Well I tried emptying the subfolders and installing the patch and it's still the same - Adalon is still invisible and the game still crashes when she tries to change form. So it looks like I'm going to have to dig up the install disk and reinstall the whole game, which probably means starting over, right?

This refers to both of you:

1. Uninstall both ToB and SoA
2. go to BG2 folder where it was installed and DELETE folders DATA and OVERRIDE (if those are sill present there)
3. Reinstall the game in the same folder where it was before. You'll still have your saved games, portraits and characters!
