    I recently started a solo (Wild) Mage, and I can't seem to do, well, anything to clay golems. In Chapter 1 with the 2 lesser clay golems I had to haul my magic bum outta there with a Haste spell because I couldn't do ANYTHING to their magic resistance.
    I'm also completely unable to hurt the Clay Golem at the start of the Planar Sphere.

    Anyone have experience playing a solo mage and know how to deal with these Playdough brutes? The only spell I can think of is Pierce Magic, and I can't cast level 6 spells yet.

    Whack away with magical blunt weapons. Buff with stoneskin and mirror image. Sometimes, the spells aren't worth it. Golems qualify for that category.

    Melf's Minute Meteors should work - the fire damage won't happen, but they're blunt weapons and do enough damage (and if you're soloing, you should generate more than enough). Summon up some goons to distract them while you fire off your meteors if they're getting on top of you too fast.

    Failing that, get Valygar to equip a blunt weapon. Yes, I know you're soloing, but you needed him or his body to get in there. If he's still alive, use him as a meat shield and let him do some of the work as well.

    I killed him (Valygar) and used Draw Upon Holy Might about 5 times to cart him slowly back to the slums :D

    Hadn't thought of the meteors not being resistable though - thanks!

    Edit - Worked great. I had to run off and rest after all my buffs wore out. I think I could have done it in one go with a bit better luck on dicerolls, but whatever works ;) The meteors only did 2 damage a shot though, not quite what I'd call a lot :p

    Add Draw Upon Holy Might to Argohir's list. It doesn't hurt to throw in a few summon spells either.

    Clay golems can only be hurt by blunt weapons of enchanchment +3 or better. So a quarterstaff like the Staff of the Magi will definitely work.

    I'm having another problem now... There's a lethal trap that I need to get past to proceed beyond the furnace room, and I can't get rid of it. My familiar (CN - cat) can't even detect it, and neither it nor any one of the Knights of Solamnia I've charmed (I don't have summoning spells) can set it off. Just me, and I die instantly.

    I can't leave the sphere, and I don't have any way to magically Find Traps... Do I have to resort to cheating or going back to an older savegame?

    From memory, it's a Disintegrate spell (or maybe it's Finger Of Death) - try Spell Immunity: Transmutation and/or Spell Immunity: Necromancy.

    All glory to Spell Immunity!

    The lesser clay golems in Irenicus' Dungeon are not nearly as troublesome as the "real" clay golems you encounter later. Have your spider spawn kill them one at a time or pound them into the ground yourself.

    I'm pretty sure it's any blunt magic weapon for clay golems. The ones in Irenicus' dungeon can be hit by non-magical weapons, IIRC. Iron and Adamantine Golems need the +3 or better weapons to hit. I think Stone Golems need a +2 or better non-blunt weapon to inflict damage.

    Yes, but they are lesser clay golems, so they don't count.

    I don't think so.

    IIRC blunt weapons are the best ones against any type of golems. Extremely few monsters have full immunity to blunt weapons, the only one I can think of is Mustard Jelly.

    @PsiVen

    Try casting haste and runnig over it. You may be able to not trip it, or if you do, you might be able to run like hell to a door and not get hit.

    Maybe I should have gotten Spell Immunity before I came here.

    Son of a...
    "Easy" difficulty and the trap doesn't trigger.
    Well it's not quite cheating, at least.
    The game itself recommends changing difficulty for impossible battles :D
    It does look like I may have to juggle difficulty settings to avoid the Stone Golem on the other side being too wussy though...

    You can try the painsteaking combo Melf's Minute Meteors and Haste. Outrun the bastard and give 'm hell with the meteors. The only problem is patience of the player :D

    *grin* I don't have to outrun him when I've eight blurry copies of me with rock-hard skin :p

    I've made an important discovery: Air elementals - even the Lesser variety - tear up clay/stone golems FAST. :)

    In that case *I* would be overconfident and try bashing the bugger with a blunt weapon, even if I were a mage just for the fun of it :p

    @Wiegraf and others

    The lesser golems in Irencus's Dungeon can be hit with just about anything - I don't think you even need a magic weapon.

    Iron golems require +2 or better weapons to hit, of any type. However, they take full damage from blunt weapons, but only partial damage to slashing/piercing weapons weapons.

    Same thing goes for stone golems, except it's +1 or better, with blunt doing full damage, and slashing/piercing doing partial damage.

    Adamantine golems require +3 or better to hit, and like stone and iron, take full damage from blunt weapons and less damage from other weapon types.

    CLAY GOLEMS - require +3 or better weapon to hit and are immune to slashing and piercing damage, but take full damage from blunt.

    If you killed a clay golem with a +1 warhammer, I'm betting it was the warhammer you get from the D'Arnise Keep that is +1, but +4 vs. Giants. While golems are not considered giants, for some reason that weapon is coded as a +4 weapon (even though it does only +1 to hit and damage against non-giants). As such, the game considers it a +4 weapon, even though it shouldn't, and you can hit clay golems with it.
