What do you guys think is a fun class to play that is nonetheless fairly powerful beginning->middle->end? Excluding Mages and sorcerers. I know paladins are good all the way through, but I said FUN classes. :p
I really wish there was a druid kit that was actually good.. All the druid kits seem to suck, and plain druids are kinda weak.

How about a Swashbuckler dualled at lvl 12 to a fighter? The ultimate killing machine. Very low AC (helped even more with the ability to wear the amulet of the master harper, which give +3 bonus to AC), better THAC0 and Damage than a regular fighter. Not to mention the ability to, at lvl 12, find traps, pick locks, hide in shadows AND lay traps!

Seems like quite a while to wait for the dual, but on the plus side, you could have him take care of all the party's necessary thieving needs.
I've always dualed from fighters to other classes, never the other way around. Could a swash dual to fighter gain mastery, highmastery, and grandmastery in weapons?

Yep. Grand Mastery is perfectly legal with a dual-class.

I found Sorceror class to be the most fun. And it is stupidly powerful at high levels.

Wizard-Slayer. Magic resistance, 10% spell failure per hit at enemy, culmulative of course. It is not too powerfull, as it have the no amulets, rings, and/or gauntlets. The exception of this is the amulet you recieve in the beginning of ToB and you can still use boots. Shields, weapons, armors, and helmets can still be used.

Plus, you recieve the WW, GWW, and all the other goodies other fighters do.

And with GWW and the WW you attack 10 times per round and since the 10% spell failure is culmulative, no wizards will survive your wrath.

Wizard Slayer is good too. Give him a shield though for god sakes. He'll get butchered without one.

Also, you should use ShadowKeeper to un-nerf a wizard slayer. They're supposed to start out at lvl 1 with 14% MR, but it never happens. Just go into SK -> resistances -> MR to 14. All better :)

Hmm, with that in mind, a wizard slayer should be fun. Belm +2 would be a nice handy item for a wizard slayer :)
"Give him a shield though for god sakes." What about Scimitar + 5 defender? Hmm.. interesting..

Wizard Slayer with Defender in main hand, Belm in offhand. As a ranged weapon, Light Crossbow of speed. What race? Half Orc might be kinda boring, Dwarves don't really fit a dual wielding scimitar type guy.

Oh, and Mystra's Chosen, why did you suggest level 12 as the dual level from swashbuckler to fighter? Wouldn't he get the extra +1 to hit and damage at level 10?

extra thievery. Lvl 10 isn't enough.

Could wait til lvl 15 though, just for the AC and other bonuses.

How about Stalkers? I've always thought they were underrated. They're almost as good at fighting as fighters. Their only real limitation is armor, but with so many good leather armors in the game (Shadow Dragon Armor springs to mind) that's not really a problem. They can fight very well, they can backstab almost as well as thieves (only -1 to backstab modifier), and the mage spells they cast can really complement them very well. Because they're so versatile they're a lot of fun to play (you can always try using them in different ways), and they're also powerful all the way through.

Fighter/Druid multiclass is also a lot of fun, but who needs it when you have Jaheira? (right Beren? ;) )

...Assasins are fun while the enemy aint immun to backstab...500+ damage have always been fun to deal to an enemy for not looking over his/her shoulder...

I know you said "excluding mages" but do you count multi-classed mages?

A fighter/mage (or fighter/illusionist) with all spells dealing with buffing you into a better fighter is both powerful throughout the game and a lot of fun too.

Assassins - Every time you get a successful backstab in is a pride and joy. Especially when you level up and get extra backstab modifiers and extra Poison Weapon abilities. :D

Mage/Thieves - The minute you get lvl 6 spells...NIRVANA! Also, they are a very versatile class, more than capable of soloing the game by themselves, but not so broken that the game is a joke, like Sorcerers.

Ranger/Clerics - THE most powerful melee class in the game. Period. They're VERY versatile and can be great fun to play as well.

Shapeshifters (UNMODDED) - The unmodded version of this class is significantly less powerful than most of the other super uber ultra mega powerful classes. :p But, their transformations and spells still pack a good punch, especially if you maxed out your Wisdom.

Blade - THE most versatile class in the game. Again...Period.They can do everything short of fly. :p Pretty much. They're awesome fun as well. Refer to Scythesong's guide for more details.

    Fighter/Mage - Timestop+Stoneskin+Spirit Armor+Improved Haste+Timestop---> ATTACK!!

Seriously, what ISNT fun about that? Play Fighter/Mages, they are GREAT fun.

And, if you're looking for added challenge and fun, play solo.

PS: I hate you because sorcerers are not in the running. Sorcerers are the best. Sorcerers rule. Sorcerers can eat every class in the game for breakfast. Sorcerers are the most fun class there is.

    :p :p :p (j/k !)

    Cheers mate! :thumb:

Archer, one great fun class. Have a huge great wedge of all the arrows you can find, and be sure to use longbows rather than crossbows *cough*firetooth*cough* Although bolts of polymorphing are very fun...Also archers look very cool when using whirlwind.

Fighter 7/Cleric x (human dual class), or Blade. I had great fun with both classes through the game.

@Ziad: Yes, stalker's are excellent, but the thing is I've already played through the game as one. SoA and ToB.
If anyone has not tried a stalker, however, I highly recommend it.

Assassin would be alright, I'm just somewhat concerned about thaco, since he'd have to be a pure thief, not a fighter/thief.

Ziad: "Fighter/Druid multiclass is also a lot of fun, but who needs it when you have Jaheira? (right Beren? [Wink] )"

Argh, Jaheria angers me. I might have to make a fighter/druid just to prove that its a powerful class, just that Jaheria makes it look like crap :p

Well - seeing as how you have played it through, why not try a monk? Can be a tank-like guy, neat abilities, but not grossly overpowered until later on when every class is grossly overpowered.

Kensai is my favourite. A little more of a challenge at first, but when he starts getting to a high level it's fun a perverse kind of way to watch a he mows through enemies without even breaking a sweat.

Fun in both beginning, middle and the end?

That rules out dual class since they are not fun in the time between dual classing and reactivating the initial class.

Multiclass is a bit iffy. They become extremely powerful at higher levels. At lower levels a mc might not be so strong. However their versatility should make up for that at these lower levels.

Thieves and Clerics are IMHO not contenders.

Finally, my preference: fighter type characters. (Ok, sorcerer is my favourite class, but the rule is that I can't pick sorcerer and to be honest they aren't powerful at lower levels.)

Fighter types are powerful from the very beginning. They get plenty of nice and shiny magic items to choose from. Then they get Greater Whirlwind. :)
