I'm in the middle of my first time back to playing this game since...well a long time. Reading other player's adventures using a different class (Melhisedek's paladin) than my current edition makes me want to compile a list of classes to replay this game. (By the way, the first time I completed this game straight through BG2 was with a Paladin.)

So far I've got (and I'm using the benefit of Easy Tutu).

    After my wild mage...
    Monk
    Assasin
    Bard (blade)
    Thief/Mage
Barbarian (I'm not sure about this)
Illusionist (this I think will be the toughest)
Cleric (seems basic, but I've never done it).

So my question is this, or rather my topic is...

From your experience, what class and or style was your favorite to go through the game.

    Dimensions to consider are
    CHARNAME Class
    CHARNAME Alignment
Party (kind of vague, but give me an idea if it was fixed or flexible as the game progressed)

Feel free to expound on the virtues and/or challenges of any particular approach.

On all of these, I plan to just complete BG1 before I venture into BG2 realms, don't know if that matters.

I'm new to the board so if this has been addressed elsewhere, please point me toward that discussion.

I've always enjoyed the sorceror. It has a feel of God-hood to it. Anybody in your party can be a fighter or cleric. Try to grab somebody that's different for fun. I've never tried the wild mage, it seems like a character fit for me. Right now, I'm playing a shapeshifter. Pretty fun.

[IMG] You can't play with Barbarians, Monks, Assassins, Sorcerers, Wild Mages or Shapeshifters in the original BG1, or in Tales of the Sword Coast. I'm afraid topics about TuTu go in the ToB forum, guys.

Regarding BG1, my favourite class is the Thief. There's plenty to do for a thief in all the cities in the game, and a well-connected backstab can work miracles against low-level enemies.

BG - any class, whichever would fit in the party:

    PC - NG or CG
    Jaheira
    Imoen
    Branwen
    Minsc/Kivan
    Dynaheir

    BG2 - Undead Slayer

    PC - LG
    Anomen
    Jaheira
    Imoen/Jan Jansen
    Minsc/Kivan/Valygar
    Kelsey/Tsujatha

I like to get my party together as quickly as possible so XP isn't handed out to NPCs that will get the boot.

I enjoyed playing as a solo, neutral evil, half-orc fighter/cleric.

I have to be able to cast arcane spells, whether as pure mage, sorcerer, wild mage, conjurer, multi-dual class combos or as a bard at worst.

    BG1:
    PC - Halfling Fighter/Thief [CN]
Xan - Elf Enchanter [LN] (Tutu - Fighter/Mage)
    Imoen - Human Thief/Conjurer [NG] (Tutu - Swashbuckler/Mage)
    Yeslick - Dwarf Fighter/Cleric [LG]
Kivan - Elf Ranger [CG] (Tutu - Archer)

    BG2:
    PC - Half-elf Fighter/Druid [TN]
Xan - Elf Fighter/Mage [LN] (NPC mod)
Kivan - Elf Archer [CG] (NPC mod)
    Imoen - Human Thief/Mage [NG]

    Both games in one run:
Same BG1 party and PC, for BG2 replace Imoen with Haer'Dalis (Tiefling Blade,[CN])

I usually play as chaotic neutral or neutral evil with an evil (+ Jan) party, like so:

    PC: Fighter/Mage
    Korgan
    Viconia
    Edwin
    Jan Jansen

Fighter/Mage is my all-time favourite class, not even match by the Blade.

With the right equipment, they can have as good AC as anybody (more or less). Dual-wielding is my preferation, though quarterstaff -> Staff of the Magi does the trick as well.

You get most the fighting benefits, except for slower level progression and only specialization in weapons. Since you're a mage as well, you can cast "target self" protection spells like Mantle, Spell Deflection.

It's a powerful class indeed, though I usually play on insane difficulty, so I get chopped every now and then anyways. It's all in the wrists ;)

    Other classes I recommend:

    * Blade
    * Skald (picked it my first time; sentimental value; love bards; I'm from Sweden)
    * Stalker
    * Sorcerer
    * Fighter/Thief (kinda basic, though you gotta love 'em backstabs)

I probably enjoyed playing a Paladin and a Fighter/Mage most. Both were good-aligned (funnily enough in the Paladin's case).

My parties tend to be rather fixed as adding a character later always feels like they have been missing out on EXP and such-like.

Straight Thief or Assassin, always. Next time through is with a sorcerer, though (his name might be Place)

I've always had a hard time doing anything other than a solo... I've had fun solo runs with f/t, f/c, blade but I've only finished the game once with a party, and it was a party I entirely created. I guess the banters just dont impress me like they do everyone else.

Kensai -> Thief. That is the most fun class for me.

I love playing Thieves (any kit and even true class) and I love Wild Mages... I tried to play a Thief/Wild Mage MC (SKed) but I got bored pretty quickly (too powerful). I played a Swashbuckler/Fighter but it was so boring... I hate fighter classes in general, point and click is not for me, I've got to have other options (although I enjoyed my run with a Berserker --> Druid a lot).

I still have to make a Wild Mage --> Thief DC that would mean losing a lot on magic (later on) and low HPs but it could be fun.

I like playing CN characters (they tend to be strong willed individuals, something that suits charname pretty well) the cat familiar is nice (IMO) but I just love having a rabbit (NN) in my inventory (must come from some sweet memories of watching Holy Grail by the Monty Pythons).

The parties are made up logically, starting with Imoen and the others depending on what feels 'right' when I play (I'm influenced by BG2 when I plan a run with Tutu so I try to include Khalid, Jaheira, Minsc and Dynaheir... But if Khalid or Dynaheir kick the bucket I don't really care either).

I enjoyed a lot having the 'weirdos' with Charname in BG1 (Xzar, Tiax, Xan, Quayle, Garrick) the fact that you can't get them in BG2 tends to annoy me so I started playing with NPCs that are available in the sequel. I have also fond memories of dual classing many NPCs (Xzar --> Cleric, Safana --> Mage, etc).

I like priest based characters. I've played a lot combos like F/C, R/C, M/C, F/D and F/M/C. I like this class. First time I went through BG1 was with a paladin, first time through BG2 was with a Cleric.

After finishing BG for the first time, I think it's appropriate for the PC to be of chaotic alignment (due to a clue in Candlekeep), so I rarely plays other than chaotic good (Wich IMHO fits perfectly for the game).

For the fun I'll have to play a F/I and a pure druid through next time I start BG1.

I always liked playing as an avenger in BG2. For the original a minimal constitution mage was very fun, one hit and your gone.

Currently I'm playing with an archer which gets a little dull, but there's nothing like hitting 15 shots in a row at times.

The first (full) time through, I blazed through the series with a standard fighter, importing in each of the games. That was a bit too easy though, so I drifted into the more interesting categories such as Wild Mage. As for NPC's, I'm like Cardadhras in the sense that I pick the most interesting and "quirky" characters that I can. I'll usually go with Xzar, Xan, Minc, and Edwin, and Khalid in the first game, then round out my reportoire with Jan, Keldorn, and Viconia to balance out the all the dead peeps. The crazy NPC's banters are always the funniest...

my favorite are the mages. Though I don't tend to use a lot of the protective spells. I think the most number of games I've beat are with wild mage PC's of various kinds.

I enjoy playing as the Fighter/Mage the most. To me it is awesome to be able to go in and either use your arsenal of spells or go in with dual Flail of Ages/Frostreaver(I am still playing SoA). Although I had fun being a sorceror as well.

I hate any kind of restrictions, especially armor restrictions(I don't understand how I still liked Sorceror), so that rules out a lot of classes. Now, if only there were multi-class Sorcerors, like Tiana said.
