So, how do you guys equip Mazzy to best effect? I really like her, I can just never seem to decided what works best for her.

She starts off with short bows ***** and short swords ***. Obviously she need to pick a better weapon category to specialise in, but should it be a 1 or 2 handed weapon? and what about a shield?

I am thinking either halbderds or dual-bastard swords would be best for her ... what do you guys think?

Any experiences you guys have had with Mazzy would be appreciated.

I just have her use the bow of Gesen and Kundane short sword which is a pretty obvious selection. The real question is whether the PC is going to use melee weapons or not, if the PC doesn't then when can imagine Mazzy wielding Crom Fayr or the Flail of Ages... almost anything except blackrazor.
Dual wielding means either losing entirely on her ranged attacks or having to switch weapons every time, I wouldn't recommend that.

She is supposed to use shortbows. Gessen is the most obvious choice, or SPIFFY Eagle Eye from Tactics mod.

Eagle Eye is a PERFECT bow, that you can find in Improved Sarevok (WRATH) test in Hell. The bow has HIGHEST range, great speed, good THAC0 bonus AND creates 5 arrows per day. Those special arrows STUN victims with NO SAVE(It worked on dreaded Improved ırenicus! GOTTA LOVE THAT!)

(Imoen said:'Jonny! Look what I have for you!' BIG Jon was busy blasting the party with his unlimited arsenal of spells and then suddenly he was STUNNED and then beaten to death. I really wonder what Mazzy can do with that bow!!!) PLUS kills the victim with %5 chance NO SAVE. (Immy killed a Balor with ONE SINGLE shot in ToB. Cool!)

Dualwielding is a no no if you do not want to do micro-management everytime. She is a ranged support and is GOOD at her work. You will be suprised how many kills she will have. IF you need solid melee tanks you are picking the wrong lass.(Jaheira is more suited to the task)

Why would she be a wrong lass? I've got her up front with the Duskblade Halberd, and she is more than up to the task! Not the best AC in the world agreed, but she can dish out a great deal of damage to me! Dual bastard swords? Can't see why not!

I've SK'd her proficiencies however, as i have an Archer PC, and i didn't want two archers, so i put some dots in halberd and twohanded-style, and removed the shortbowdots.

Why? She is the best fighter in the game, with the possible exception of Korgan. Jaheira will have less hp and level slower than Mazzy. Ok, Jaheira has Iron Skins, but Mazzy will kill things quicker and shouldnt need the skins anyway.

I agree about the ranged weapons ... she is great for this, but she can do far more damage with a melee weapon. Maybe I will have her wield a nice big Halberd (Ravager for example) or 2h-sword.

This is where I struggle with her ... with Korgan its easy, you just put him up-front with big axes and hammers and let him kill things ... but because of her points in bows we all think she should use them, but in-fact she can do anything Korgan can (except rage).

The 2 main choices seem to be ...
    1. 2h-weapon
    2. 1h-weapon (single) for extra AC

As to bows, wouldn't Tuigan be best? 3 shots per round by default is cool and with Mazzy's THAC0 she will be slaughtering most things very quickly.

Oh, I have simply gotta try that! Mazzy with the Tuigan bow would be absolutely brutal. If you don't mind the conceptual strangeness of Mazzy using a weapon that's taller than she is, then the Ravager, Psion's Blade, or Gram the Sword of Grief (Sigurd rules) should be good.

Give her Gesen's Short Bow and something like Bracers of Archery etc to augment her ranged prowess.

    Don't bother with melee.

And don't bother with 2 handed weapons style. It does not apply to bows.

It depends on the character you're playing, I would definitely keep Tuigan bow for the PC. ;)

Only if you're playing an archer type character obviously.

You'd be stupid if you gave your PC Tuigan's bow if he was a Thief or something when you've got Mazzy who can put it to a lot more use.

@Faraaz: I'm not stupid I'm Neutral Evil!
I don't understand why I would give her one of the best items I ever found just because she can use it better than I do!
3 attacks make a lot of difference for a Thief you know. :)

I agree with what Bard said but I would say that his two main choices are too restrictive - she can be built up just about any way that you would like her to be.

The last time I used Mazzy I decided to ignore her points in bows and turn her into a dual wielder - there is no problem with this, she can reach grandmastery in any other weapon and have more than enough points to spare for dual wielding.

    The BEST idea, T2Bruno!

In my last run with item upgrade mod I put points on scimitar and let her use upgraded avoreen sword and water's talon. guess what, at the end of the game she killed most enemies in my party (PC-F/M, Mazzy, Kheldon, Jaheira-SKed to R/C)

So IMO it depends on what you want her to be. She's a great damage dealer with whatever weapon she can wield.

    EDIT : few typos.

If she's dual wielding short swords, I would suggest putting points in Flail/Morning Star. Though, if you can take the two-handed sword prof., you can wield her in both hands and add 1.5 times your strength to damage rolls. Of course, now she's a reach weapon and you can attack from behind a better protected NPC/PC.

I thought 1.5 x damage was 3E rules, not 2E... The only damage bonus you should be getting in BG2 due to wielding two-handed weapons is either from having proficiencies in two-handed style, or from the (generally) higher base damage of the relevant weapons.

@ Bard: I'd say she was definitely Flail/Morningstar... Those dreads look like they could *hurt*
