Blade Strategies?

Since I loved playing the fighter/mage/thief, I thought that the Blade would be a similar alternative. However, the Blade is, in its own right, a completely different character. Any suggestions on what type of statistics at character creation I should aim for? Do the boots of speed conflict with offensive spin? I am also taking opinions on equipment, spells, etc. I have already read most of Scythesong's guide and some other things about Blades, but would really like some input from the helpful members of this board. Thank you!

Ummm... yeah. I sort of already mentioned that I read that. What I was really aiming for was feedback from the various members of the board who each have their own separate opinions.

 

I did start a blade with the intention of playing to the end with him. I just got bored of him though and ended up starting again with a different char.

Personally I think the Fighter/Mage combo works best for me because you get the extra *'s in whatever weapon your using.

I found my blade to very weak in melee. His one saving grace is the two spin abilities he gets. I can see late in the game how the offensive spin could be pretty uber simply because it causes maximine damage every time you hit plus it gives you an extra attack. I would argue though that a Fighter 9/Mage X or a multi F/M is probably a lot more effective and fun to play. Again though what seperates the blade is those two spin abilities.

As far as stats go I can tell you that your blade will HAVE to have a high strength. Especially at low levels when your THAC0 sucks. You will have a very hard time hitting anything with a low strength. Also pretty much an 18 DEX is a must to make up for the lack of heavy armor. I guess you could get away with a low CON but that adds to the difficulty of keeping your blade alive.

What makes the blade very difficult is you need high stats in just about everything except for Wis.

I made the mistake of trying to play a Blade in a non-powergamer way. I only allowed myself one reroll on creation and he ended up being near impossible to play. It can be done but it is very difficult and you need your spins up for even what should be simple fights. Which led to me having to rest constantly.

Boots of Speed. Hrmmm IIRC the boots of speed don't stack with your offensive spin. The offensive spin technically hastes you and I'm positive it doesn't stack with boots of speed. You still only get the one extra attack from OS.

I can't really comment on the end game but I'm sure that by then the blade is quite powerfull. By then he would be very similiar to F/M but he also gets the Offensive Spin. I just didn't have the patience to through the training stage.

 

Free Movement and Defencive spin works like a charm! Its grand! Its been so long since I finished the game with a Blade so I just cant recall my strategies!!!

 

I heard that Free Movement+Defensive Spin thing was a bug and was nerfed by a patch or fix?
What about Misleads singing Improved Bard Songs as a chore?

Blades are hard to make effective, but once you learn how to do so, they are quite effective I guess!

 

Ive got my game patched with fan made patches as well as the Bio ones and still works. The defensive thing.... I never thought about using mislead as a song player.... so many strategies with that Blade... love it!

 

There's a new fixpack coming out that actually will fix the bug within the next few months.

 

Which bug? Defensive Spin+Free movement bug, or Mislead chore bug? Or are there even more bugs?
