    Hi,

I am thinking of playing either a monk or pure elven kensai on my third time though SOA/TOB. My first character mc f/m is currently in chapter 8. My second, a mc f/t is in chapter 2 and I want to start a third.

However, in my first journey through the game upto chapter 8 I have found nothing that would fit in a kensai or monk armor/robe slot.

I know that they can't wear armor but I would have thought that there might be the odd robe or two that might be usable by them. Is there anything like that after chapter 8 that I don't know about yet?
I used SK to browse through the robes and couldn't find anything.

Something equivalent to an archmage robe or even just a resistance or traveller type robe would have been nice to have early in the game when the monks AC is pretty lousy and the kensai just does not hit hard or fast enough to offset his poor AC.

Decking a kensai out in the best AC stuff I can think of would yield a AC of -2 or -3, assuming a dex of 18,
but I could not get all of that until chapter 6. Maybe AC is not that much of a problem with either class since they hit so hard and fast? Won't know unless I play them I guess. Any thoughts on this?

A monks AC looks if it will only be a problem in the early stages of the game.

I am tempted to try creating an item for them but have no idea how I might go about it. I wondered whether a travellers or knave robe for monks or kensai might be good early in the game and then a archmage type robe be made available say in the underdark.

    How about this:

    Haori of FengShui
    AC+1 versus slashing weapons
+1 to saving throw versus death

    Haori of Electrical Resistance etc

And the ultimate in oriental dress

    Sensei Haori
    sets AC to 5
    +1 to saving throws
increases speed by 1 and inceases attacks per round by 1/2

Have to come up with some suitable descriptions. A Haori is a three quarter length kimono shaped coat.

Obviously if I were to dual the kensai to mage then problem solved (except that I want to play an pure elven one and see how good he/she is at high level)

Could I play a human mage and then dual to a kensai at say level 12? I seem to remember that you can only take a kit with the starting class?

    Anyway, enough rabbling on.

    Cheers,

    WittyNewt.

I'm pretty sure there's nothing that a pure monk or kensai can put in that slot. You can't dual to a kit, but a Kensai dualled to a mage can wear mage robes, of course. If you never want to lose a fight you could wear the robe of Vecna, for example.

[IMG] Well since you are considering putting stuff into your game already, surely you want think me bad for suggesting that you should make your own dual class. The nice thing about shadowkeeper, I found, was that when you get bored playing the traditional multi and dual classes that poor old second edition offers, you can always use it to alter which class gets the kit in either a dual or multiclass situation. For instance, you can always start out as a basic mage and dual to a Kensai (not a bad idea really now that I think of it). Just dual a mage to a fighter, then use shadowkeeper to change the kit from none to Kensai, and there you have it. Also, there is also the option of adding a kit to a multiclass character, which admitedly could also be very fun, though I never really experimented with it too much before I uninstalled the game. My one experiment of a multiclass elven wizard slayer/mage wasn't as hot as I expected. Go figure, though she would have been a much more powerful mage killer towards the end of the game. Anyway, hope this will gives you some hope for a mage dual Kensai. I'd at least suggest trying it out; could be alot of fun.

    Hi,

Well, I am not really serious about putting new items into the game, for a start I don't know how to do it and also I would be worried I might unbalance it somewhat.
My list was really a wish list that I thought the developers might have addressed if they had the time which I am sure they did not.
It would be nice to have at least one special item in the game that each class could use in those restricted slots. Would have added little extra quest to the game.
Mage would always want the staff of magi and the kensai would hope to get the legendary sensei robe etc etc.

There were probably lots of things they wanted to do but couldn't due to time constraints.

Thanks for the tip regarding mage->kensai dual. Hitpoints might be a problem unless I dual very early.

I'll experiment with a mage in bg1 and dual him to a fighter at level 3 to get access lvl 2 spells such as mirror image and blur and bump him up to 89,000 with gatekeeper. import him into BG2, alter him with shadowkeeper and see how he plays through the first dungeon.

I will also start my elven kensai as well and make a choice after the first dungeon.

    1 hour later....

Well I managed to get a mage->kensai dual into BG2, and learnt a few things about SK along the way.
Created a human mage in BG1. Bumped him up to level 3 xp with GK. Levelled him up and dualed him to a fighter in BG1.
Bumped him up to lvl 8 xp with GK again. Levelled him up in BG1 and exported him.
Imported him into BG2, choose new skills etc and started BG2 and saved.
Finally, changed to a kensai kit with SK, added the innate kensai abilities and copied over the affects from my elven kensai at lvl 8 (forgot to do this at first and when I checked his to hit rolls I found he wasn't getting his +2 THACO kensai bonus.)
Then started playing him through the first dungeon. Everything looks fine so far. His kai works, he gets the appropriate additions to his THACO and he has the +2 AC bonus.
I gave him a travellers robe with SK and he is able to wear it.

I'll play him through the first dungeon and see how he gets on.

I chose shield, armor and blur for his spells, with that amulet that gives a bonus 2nd lvl spell he will have two 2nd level and 2 first lvl spells, basic defence ones.
More importantly he will be able to wear a robe!

Not sure whether to feel proud of myself though - still its my game.

I never did like the racial restrictions in DND and I can see no good reason why you can't select a kit on the second class of a dual instead of the first.

Of course, I could be bitten by some serious self inflicted bugs because of the GK and SK hacks in the near future.....

    Cheers,

    WittyNewt

I think I heard that Monks can wear Keldorn's armor if they have the right stats. I'm not sure if it was monks or some other class though.

Yea, monks can. They need these stats though:
    15 STR
    17 CON
    12 INT
    18 CHA
I took this out of Dan Simpsons guide though, so I'm not positive it's correct.

Well so far I haven't been bitten by any of the keeper bugs as long as you only change the class or stats of your main character. I've found if you keep it simple, there are usually no bugs. However, I've found if you start adding things like the custom keeper spells or special abilities, it will usually mess up your game. Also, messing around with the classes or whatever of other party members (or so I hear at least) can cause trouble.

If you're worried about HP for your main character, you can always summon a familiar. As much as I hated my pseudo dragon, he did add alot of extra HP. Also, there are ion stones that add to your HP total, and don't forget. Now that you're a fighter, after you hit level 10, you'll be getting the extra 3 hp per level instead of 1, and that can add up.

    Hi,

Well I have played him through the first level of Irenicus's dungeon with no problems.

I think I have realised why this combination might be a bit too powerful though.

Since he is a mage, even only a level 3 one he can use anything a mage can use... Obvious I know but my original intent of all of this was just to give him a decent robe.

So you are right about familars, that will help with HP, he has 60 right now, it won't take him long to reach 100 and that seems to be enough.
However, he now has a missile attack, magic: wands, scrolls etc.
A couple of scroll cases filled with stoneskin will see him though the game, plus other defensive spells.
He needs negative plane protection? well he just borrows the amulet of power from my mage. He has a "use any mage item ability" and yet will still get stronger as a kensai as the game progresses.

He could be the ultimate buffed up hard hitting fighter with miniminal compromise.

Obviously he is not a mage, but he has access to any buffing ability a mage could offer to further enhance his fighting skills.

    Cheers,

    WittyNewt

  9. Well, monks can wear Keldorn's armour but if I'm not mistaken it's no longer allowed after you installed ToB.

Ahh well give the man some scrolls of Tenser's Trasformation and watch out;) Sounds like a fun class really. I never thought about it before this topic, but it seems like a class with some cool special abilities. Plus it's a class not too many people have played, I'm sure. Keep me updated. I'm really interested in this one.

Monks can wear Keldorn's armor but by the time you find better armor to give to Keldorn your monk doesn't need it anymore. Of course you can just ditch the best magic dispelling true seeing NPC in the game.

Haori of Feng Shui? Feng Shui? Isn't that the ancient art of arranging furniture?

    Hi,

Yep, correct, call it a lame joke if you like, still don't know how to put smileys in my post.

Also, I forgot to add the ability to that robe.

Once a day: Cast Environment Enhance

    Environment Enhance

    Range: centred on caster
    Radius: 30' or single room
    Saving Throw: none
    Casting time: 1

Adds +1 to all party rolls (Aka Luck).
The environment in a 30' radius of the caster is changed to add luck to the party.
In a room with furniture, one could expect items to move and the odd red stone or sensitively coloured single flower to appear in a corner....

    Another lame joke.

    Cheers,

    WittyNewt

Better yet, add this ability to your robe:

Feng Shui- use once per day

Summons a couch from midair that crushes enemies, doing 10d10 points of damage. Afterwards, couch positions itself in the room so as to enhance the natural flow of positive energy.

Hey, didn't I tell y'all I used to have a black belt in Feng Shui? I forgot to put it in my last post. ;) :p
