Icewind Dale II and Neverwinter Nights seem to be full of those books. Strangely, I find them boring in the game and never read them, but on the other hand, I spend a lot of the rest of my day reading fantasy books so I'm not sure why I like one and not the other.

Because they are more like history books then Fantasy books. I'm a bit like you concerning the books of NWN. On the other hand I read almost every book in BG, there are some nice ones that come really close to good Fantasy books, except that they're too thin, they don't even reach the 700 pages limit. :D

But why does The History of Tethyr not go into a scroll case? I hate that book!

I've probably read all of them once, but I don't read every single book every single time. After the first play through, I sort of pick and choose which ones to read. Also, the BG series is somewhat of an anomaly. Yes, they were also there in Icewind Dale, but most RPG's don't have books all over the place.

I think they just added the histories because they already had the backstory worked out, so it was no work to just stick bits of it in the game. :p

If you were creating a world from scratch you'd have to come up with all this stuff, they could just read a few D&D sourcebooks... :D

I used to read them sometimes. They are a good addition to these games, they make the game more colourful...

[IMG] They just add more time to your gaming if you can be bothered to read them they are quite good for info on history in the forgotten realms I suppose.

I have read them all by now, so I don't bother to read them again every time I play.

It would be nice if the helped during the game though.

I read a few of them when I first played the game because I figured they'd have some bearing on the way the game went. I remember being quite disappoined when I finished and found reading them didn't make a blind bit of difference. Now I just ignore them.

I don't think that would be a good idea. It might make the game too hard or long, and it would be easy to get stuck.

They're just there to add a bit of depth to the world. Nothing more. However it would be cool if certain books could be of benefit to the player. Someting like, adding more dialogue options, increasing wisdom or intelligence. Still, it's fun to find out stuff about Forgotten Realms when playing the game.

[IMG] Some I do read, some I don't. The History of the dead 3 is cool, yes. Personally I love reading item descriptions: A hero, a warrior, a great mage, his story and demise... just love it!!!

I also liked that book, Xerxes. That mage dude is Firebead Elvenhair, by the way. :)

I've not played through BG1, (cuz I can't stand the graphics or gameplay, you have to use the keyboard to scroll!!!! AHH!!!), so I'm wondering if someone can join one of my gameswith the book, I'd like to read it :D .

I definately read books randomly, but I would have to say the description for the, "Big Metal Unit" is by far the most hilarious thing I've ever read, I didn't even understand half of it, but I was laughing sooooo hard!!

You need to use the key board to scroll? Whered you get that idea??? Although the default speed for mouse scroll is slow, so i set it max.

Are the books actully based on FR history, or are they made up like the BG story?
    Yes, that's right, I don't read them.

FR history all the way. I found them very interesting, and the Dead Three was the best (that is the one about Bhaal, Bane, and Myrkul, right?).
