I've heard there are 5 pairs in the game. I've got the one in the Planar prison, and 1 in spellhold, so where are the other 3?

 

There are actually 6 pairs in ToB and SoA.

In SoA:

The two that you mentioned.

If you side with Bhodi in Chapter 3, when you kill Aran Linvail, he will have boots of speed equiped.

In ToB:

When you kill Illasara (sp?) the first Bhaal Spawn you encounter after killing Irenicus.

IIRC there is a mage who wants you to find his spellbook in Saradush. When you return it ot him, he will sell you several items, including a pair of boots of speed.

Not too sure about the last one. I know it is there, and I'm guessing that you can buy it in Amkethran.

 

I always played good and I when I never had more than 5 pairs of boots of speed for my party - that's why I like the grandmaster armor so much:

• So in BG-2 SoA there are 1 to 3 pairs of boots of speed, they can be found:
  -in planar prison
  -on Aran Linvail's body only when you join Bohdi (though I never checked that)
  -in that mashine in spellhold: When you're lucky, it produces a third pair of boots of speed. IIRC they are generated randomly.
• In ToB Boots of speed can be found:
  -on Illasera's body
  -in the mage's shop in Saradush and/or iirc in the other shop there - all in all there should be 2 pairs for sale in Saradush

Totalling 4 to 6 boots in the whole game. I actually never found more boots of speed after Saradush - when leaving the town my party was fully equipped with speed enhancers (5 boots of speed & grandmaster armor), so I doubt there are some for sale in Amkethran.
The only other item I found was the amulet of cheetah speed, but I think it mainly makes sense for monks or barbarians due to their already improved movement rate.

I'm sure the boots of speed in spellhold aren't random. I you get them as a reward for putting 15 mithril tokens in the machine.

 

On that note, has anybody ended up with about four more mithril tokens, and there aren't anymore anywhere.

 

Aran has it? I killed him and he didn't have it!(As far as I can remember)

Ummm..... I checked with Shadowkeeper on all of Aran's CRE files, and he doesn't have it.

Renal Bloodscalp, Aran's 2nd hand mand I believe, has the boots of speed on his char file if you look with SK.

 

I never use them anyway, I like my whole party going at the same pace. I just keep them in the inventory when I need them for ambushes and other things. Exept when soloing...

 

The sixth (or fifth - I don't know) pair of boots you can get off of the scroll merchant in Saradush - or later on in Amkethran when you see him again. Not sure what happens if you buy them from him in Saradush, whether you can buy another set in Amkethran - he seems to restock on everything And the Grandmaster armour rules!

(BTW: I think the most tokens I ever had was 21 or something - which left me with 1 after using the others.)

the second place you can buy the boots of speed in Saradush is the tavern/inn
the bartender guy has a pair at the bottom of the list, near that scimitar/ninja-to/ wakenski... ya know

 

For 20 Mithril Toekns you get the Jesters chainmail +4, but other than what everyone else has told you, I have no idea where you can get Boots of Speed, there is supposed to be a pair of Boots of Extraordinary Speed(or something slimilar) but I have no idea where those are.

 

Boots of Extraordinary Speed give your vhar a double haste, but then you can't attack or cast spells or, well, anything useful. Also, I think they were cursed.
