You're making a new character starting from ToB, right? Are you going to play solo or with a party?

Bard classes can provide a good challenge, but in ToB they can be pretty powerful and the game can get too easy. Wild mages are fun and their unpredictable Wild Surges adds an interesting dynamic to the game. Monks and Kensais are cool, but won't provide a challenge. Try playing a straight Fighter or impose restrictions on yourself such as the No-Name rule where you can't use any weapon that has a special name (thus limiting yourself to vanilla +1, +2 and +3 weapons).

Truthfully, without any add-ons the game is not really hard to finish with any character if you use the right tactics.

I recommend downloading the Ascension mod to get more out of the game. I promise you, you wouldn't want to go back once you install this baby. One word of caution if you install the mod, since you're starting with a new character from ToB, don't install the Improved Illasera component of the mod. It's extremely hard to take down the first of the Five with a new character.

EDIT: Almost forgot, welcome to the forum Wedge!

Solo Assassin...or Solo Blade. Pick one...both are a challenge to solo with if you don't know what you are doing with that particular class. But once you learn the nuances of those classes (as the game goes on of course) you will be very, VERY powerful! That's the point of soloing anyway, innit? :)
