Looking for a certain mod combination.

Alright, I haven't played BG2 since it was first released. I recently bought it and the expansion pack again. I had no idea the mod scene for these games was so active and I'm completely lost. I've read through a lot of the mod descriptions but can't quite grasp it.

I'm looking for mods that are compatable with each other and can be used in "single multiplayer" (so I can create more than 1 character).

I've always preferred magic casters because that's the only time the player had much imput during combat. However, I found spellcasters to be pretty one-dimensional in BG2: they merely countered other spellcasters. That and there was so much magic resistance and insanely high "save" rolls fighters (even mediocre ones) were far more effective.

Can anyone think of a mod (or combination of mods) that have the following characteristics and are balanced and reasonably stable?

    - New Kits/Classes (preferably ones for Mage or Thief classes)
    - More spells (if reasonably balanced)
    - Better enemy AI (but NOT combined with the lame way of increasing difficulty in the original games)
    - More shops ('cause I like shoping and to make money more useful in the game)
    - Something that allows a powerful spellcaster to actually be powerful

BTW, I never got to the later few Chapters of BG2, letalone the expansion. How does it work for mid-high level spells where level limits their power. A 20d6 (or whatever) damage spell probably isn't all that significant against a higher level monster with countless protections and whatnot.

    Thanks for you help.

Well for starters, I'd play through all of SoA and ToB at least once before loading on the mods, so that way you get a feal of the original game. This would also give you better ideas as to which parts of the game (ie. particular battles) that you might want to find different mods for.

Start with the bonus merchants then the spell 50 mod is what you need to make your spellcasters happy (friends and foes alike) and then you could try the Art of Weaving which introduces new kits for magic users (I haven't played it yet but I read very promising things about it).
Wild Magic is the way to go! :D

Thanks for the ideas. I'm thinking about the Acension mod as well. I like the idea of having better AI...but does anyone know a way to get the AI improvements without the whole "double/tripple" damage aspect?

I looked at the Spell-50 mod but wasn't sure how badly it would mess up the balance. My main concern spellcasters was magic resistance, spell protections, magic items and rediculous save vs. ___ roles enemies always got. Then again, at later levels, are the capped spells pretty useless?

Has anyone tried Check the Bodies and the Stronghold mod? I wonder how compatable they are will smaller mods.

    Hairysun,

In all honesty, I got bored of BG2 after leaving the big city. That's why I'm going to go with mods from the start.

The Art of Weaving is no longer available. All of the kits in it along with a huge selection of new ones will be available in the upcoming RPG Dungeon Kit Pack. You may be able to find The Art of Weaving 4.0 at a mirror site somewhere, but it's no longer actively being supported by its author.

Improved Asylum will do it, but that's only an AI booster for one dungeon. Tactics will also do it, but the enemies cheat pretty extensively there.
