Usually when I play, Mae'Var, as his first quest, gets me to steal something from the Talos temple. I don't know what's changed this time, but he's making me raid the Lathander temple. I read ages ago that if your character is evil then he'll make you take from the Lathander temple rather than the Talos, but I'm not evil. I'm wondering if one of the mods I've installed has somehow affected this. Anyway know anything?

You're correct with everything you've said. Mae'Var's first mission for you is to steal a pendant from the High Priestess in the Talosian temple, unless you're evil. In that case, he asks you to steal a figurine from the Temple of Lothander. If you aren't evil, it shouldn't be this way. I can think of no mod out there that would change this.

I thought so. I've installed the SoA and ToB patches, a couple of minor mods that only add things to the override directory, and aside from that, I've added Kelsey. Kelsey's the biggest addition to the game I've made, but I don't see how that could affect it.

One question: the Lathander temple seems only to contain Morning Knights - none of the priests and stuff that are usually there are present. If I kill the knights and finish the quest, will the temple be back to normal when I return? I'm thinking of the quest you can do for them through the temple of Helm.

I just used to expression to convey the necessity to kill people, which isn't necessary in the Talos quest.

I think the quest given depends on your reputation. And no, I don't think Lathander's faithful will be too happy if you kill any of their number.

It's possible to get the figurine at night without alerting anyone. The morning nights aren't there, although you still have to be careful, as temple priests wander all around the temple, and sometimes stay in the area where the figurine is for quite some time. With some patience, it's possible to get the figurine and have no one see you.

As Scythesong mentioned, the temple you steal from is linked to your reputation. If you go in and kill anyone, no they won't be too chuffed with you.

It is possible to do it in the day as well through extensive use of rapidly hiding in the shadows.

This JUST happened to me for the first time ever...I ALWAYS get the Talos task, but this time it was Lathander. I assumed it was because my reputation when starting the Thieve's stronghold quest was the lowest it's ever been at that point...because I'd taken Viconia and hadn't done very many other quests by then. It's good to have confirmation that this was the case, although I'm still not sure that the Virtue mod didn't have something to do with it; that thing caused all kinds of wackiness with my NPCs. :p

Heh, Virtue managed to confuse my people too when I had it installed. However, the church you get to burgle is unrelated to Virtue as I don't have it installed anymore.
