[IMG] I'm thinking about going solo, but I'm not sure what class to use. So far a lot of people have said kensai 12/mage xx. I like the idea, but I've never really adapted to fighting with no armor, and they are weak as a kitten after dualing. It would be hell trying to get the kensai part back. 'Course, I could always SK or CLUA it, but that's cheating ;) . So far, I think my choice may be a Human Archer dualled to a cleric later and then SKed to elf. But that's a very un-educated decision.

If you have never solo'ed before, you might want to try a F/T or F/M/T. Also, you can try F/M. It makes solo'ing significantly easier if you have a character that's part thief. Given that you are posting in the TOB forum, I assume that you have it. Thus, forget about dual-classing, as multi-class characters are much more powerful choosing from two pools of HLA's.

I have played with a pure class sorcerer solo and is very easy but you have no find traps. For lock pick use Knock. Sorcerer rules!

Mate...if you're a newbie, I agree with dmc. Definitely go with a multiclass, first things first, as that makes your game TONS easier.

Also, F/M/T without an xp cap, or a F/M is a very easy class to play.

Not without its merits, is an M/T multiclass, possibly modded with SK to give yourself one of the thief kits, like Swashbuckler or Assassin.

PS: You CANNOT play an Archer d/c to Cleric...atleast, legally. You can only dualclass a plain ranger to a cleric, and that too with some really AWESOME stats. Its a LOT simpler if you just took the multiclass and modded it with SK.

I, like Faraaz, enjoy a M/T multiclass, except I SK mine to use the Bounty Hunter kit. The special traps a Bounty Hunter gets are awesome -- they can be thrown! Approach an enemy while using invisibility/sneaking till you see them, back off just enough so they get lost in the fog of war, and then throw a special trap at them -- good fun.

However, if this is your first solo, dmc is right, F/M/T probably your best bet. The M/T requires some advanced tactics since he cannot really go toe to toe in combat, but the F/M/T can.

I would go for something like a Berserker/mage. I would go with one dualed like this: B9/Mxx or B12/Mxx...
It really aint that hard to regain lvl's. Set the dif. to normal, and learn as many spells as possible. If there's none to share the xp with, then you'll get a lot of lvl's quick!

Thanks, guys, I'll think about those. I'm not a newbie to the game (beaten it at least 4 times) but I am a newbie to the forums. I think that you are right about the archer not being able to dual, but there was a bug in the beginning that let me dual. I didn't use it yet because I wanted a few more levels. After I gained the level it had grayed out. So I SKed it. ;) SO much easier. I also decided to go as a pair with Aerie instead of solo. I wanted a mage who could use knock, and my cleric has detect traps, so I should be pretty well off. Not to mention I'll have the romance plot with her. That's always fun. ;)

I noticed that some people were saying you should dual at 9 or 12...

DO NOT DUAL class at lvl 12!! If you hold off till lvl 13 (thats right, just one more level), you get an extra half attack!!! There is no good reason to give that up!

Yes, that's true. Personally, with dualling I'd either go for the 13 level, for extra attack, or dual straight in Irenicus' Dungeon.

Good choice going with Aerie as well. I've always found duoing much more rewarding than soloing - Mage CHARNAME & Edwin, Nameless One & Ignus/Dak'kon, or mage & druid in IWD are all fun. There's only so many ways you can deal with encounters on your own, but with two PCs you can come up with all sorts of crazy plans and you still get nice high XP :) Not to mention you don't have to micro-manage a whole party. You can always leave one or other at the entrance if you want to go dungeon crawling alone.

    @ Rhetorical

Uh huh. Exactly what I was thinking. I had a feeling that an elven archer wasn't gonna do so hot by himself (no lock picking!?) so I went with aerie to get healing and knock. Mage/Clerics are so incredibly useful. :)

    How about a duet?

I have a fighter 9/cleric xx alongside a thief 8/mage xx. This combo seems to work fine so far but I have yet to meet any serious oposition.
Having fighter 9 (from TOSC) gives me Grand Mastery in Flail. I can keep most trouble away from my mage if I buff up the F/Cl before a scrap.

plz don't link directly to mods in the future,
and a sorcerer or F/T Multi would be your best choice if soloing for the first time, berzerker is also nice

A pure kensai with right equipment really causes havoc and destruction! Just get Crom Faeyr and Celestial Fury (or better, Kuroisan's UBER katana in Tactics mode) and he will do MASSİVE damage with 25str! He will get awesome bonus to hit, damage and speed in high levels plus 25 str, he will have a THACO of -25 or better with a base damage of 40+ each hit! Do it with whirlwind attacks critical hits, you do hundreds of damage in a single round. AC may be low but get shield amulet and have protective spells this will be no problem.
İf you have Aerie, it will be a perfect team, she protects and heals you, breaches enemy wizards, also does damage with spells and summonings, while kensai just quickly slays all dares to oppose him! Gotta be fun!

Play a Blade solo...they are the most POWERFUL characters. who are weak in a party...but they are MONSTERS in solo gameplay! Just ask Scythesong Immortal! :D In fact...go read his guide on SP right now.

Just FYI, once you get Improved Bard Song you are UNSTOPPABLE...because I am assuming you will have Mislead by that time as well.

Just cast as many Misleads as you can, and have all the clones sing, and hide them in a room somewhere...then go clear out the entire area of enemies...because you will be UNTOUCHABLE!

I couldn't agree more with Faraaz.
The Blade kit has the Offensive Spin ability which allows this bard to become a real killing machine: extra attack and maximum damage with any weapons...
Forget about Kensais, with the right items the Blade is unstoppable!

The blade is sick as heck, with a ring of free movement the defensive spin is awsome in a sticky situation. Add a robe of vecna ontop of that and ur spells will fly out before the AI gets to react at all! MMMM time stop, improve haste, offensive spin.... thats what i call sick!

    @ Darkstrike,

I'm a little unclear as to how a Blade would cast a Time Stop?
