The romances are really just a series of dialog options that occur during the game. You have to answer appropriately for the NPC you are romancing. Depending on your response/action you will further the romance, stop it or the NPC may walk off and leave you.

There are a couple of very good guides available on this website, that can give you a much more in-depth detail about each of the romances. Look in the BG2 Game Index. I think it is under Walkthroughs, but it might be under the Tricks/Tips section.

There are a lot more romances available nowadays, especially with all the mods that are available.

The possibility of a baby only occurs in the TOB part of the romance.

There is only the birth of a baby in the Aerie-TOB romance, although the PC may become pregnant (player's choice) in the TOB portion of the Kelsey mod romance as well. (the baby is born "off-camera" in epilogues, however.)

If you want to read one of the most complete romance guides, I recomend you download the guide that can be found off of Sorcerer's Place...I'm too lazy to look for a link, but I'm sure you can find it without too much effort. :rolling:

If you decide to follow Kitrax's advice and read the romance guide, be careful, as it contains huge spoilers. Don't just go skimming through the whole thing!

Oh yeah, the guide(s) only include the SOA portion of the romances. Unless they have been updated recently.

Go find that guide. Extremist made a good one, but only for SoA. I think remember seeing the dialogue tree for ToB conversations, but I'm not fully sure where and if at all I saw it.

The idea is basically that an NPC initiates a dialogue every certain period of time. For some dialogues, specific conditions must be met and those depend on quests or on the area, or area type. Some will happen only after completion of specific quests, some will only pop up in some areas, some won't start in dungeons, and so on.

Be thoughtful about the lines you choose and don't rush. Works the same way as with real life romance NPCs.
