I need some help. The gatekeeper at Candlekeep wants to fight me. It seems that nothing I can do will get me past him. I have the book I need from Baldur's Gate, the Tome of Nether Thought.

I think I might have made him mad early in the game when I tried to go back to candlekeep. I was damaged and needed rest and that seemed to be the closest place. I thought I would see if I could rest there. I don't remember exactly, but I might have tried to Charm him or accidentally wound up attacking him instead of talking to him.

Surely there must be a way around this problem. I have spent waaaaaayyyy too much time and come way too far to have to reset back to chapter 1 now. There could not be a game THAT cruel, could there?

How can I make this guy at least neutral toward me so I can talk to him and give him the book?

If there's a way to get him neutral towards you I do not know, but I think there is a cheat you can use to teleport yourself inside of the walls. I can't remember it exactly, but you should check out here: http://www.sorcerers.net/Games/BG/index.php and see if anything useful is there.

As far as I know there's no way to revert hostile NPCs back to normal. Essentially, you're screwed if that happens and you don't have a previous save game where they're still neutral. I don't know if teleporting inside Candlekeep would do you any good either, since there's probably a trigger attached to the event of handing the book over to the warden.

I did find the cheat keys to get inside candlekeep. However, all NPCs inside there are hostile too.

Bummer. Seems I've wasted lots of time getting here when I should have just started over.

If I remember correctly (and it was a long time ago). having the people inside the keep hostil won't affect you too much. Just try and avoid them as much as possible, you should still be able to progress the story from there unless there is a specif trigger as Tal suggests (anyway, its worth trying rather than starting again). Also consider reading the mild spoiler below:

Spoiler - IIRC most of the people inside turn against you later anyway because you either have or get framed for a scrap with one of the main villains of the story. it just means tat they have effectivley turned hostile early. There is only one person that must be on your side and he turns up a bit later to help you out of a hole. Again i reckon its worth trying to play through, avoid killing people and see if the guy will help you when he appears. better than replaying the whole thing for a bug.

If you manage to charm him anyway, will he not be friendly for a little while?

You can't talk to charmed NPCs.
