In what ways are they better than normal mages besides that they are random but get more spells? Has anyone used them extensively?

This is related to SoA and not only ToB because you can play with a wild mage through SoA. Has anyone done that? How did you do?

I am currently playing a wild mage through SoA, and all I can say is it is FUN!
Not sure whether any comparison with normal mage would be fair though.

Yeah, when you cast a fireball with a normal mage, you can count on doing some damage to the opponents, not blasting your own party or summoning a few birds.

A fun class, until everything manages to go wrong. But at least you can't complain that it's boring.

Wild mages are great because you can use a first level spell to cast any spell in your spellbook; even if it is not memorized or if you are not high enough level to cast it yet.

They are the most versatile spell-casters in the game (other than cleric-mages) and as long as you use chaos shield, your wild surges are more likely to be positive than negative. I had a lot of fun with my wild mage, and I loved casting high-level spells like simulacrum and mordenkainen's sword at a mere 10th level!

I played a Wild Mage through SOA and TOB and its quite fun. It has a lot of surprises too. Try to batle a dragon when your first spell changes you into a wolf.:)
But the good effects of wild magic are very beneficial so the Wild Mage class is for me the best choice for a specialist mage.

for all the bad stuff that can happen it has some absolutely AMAZING results like summon effreti when its surged with area effect, but it can suck when you try to cas somthing as simple as magic missile and end up confusing your entire party

I found wild mages to really fall down when casting magic missile; because their caster level is always going up and down, you can get either many or few missiles completely at random. Unfortunately, the wild mage I am currently using always seems to experience the latter; particularly annoying when you're trying to take down a stoneskinned/mirror imaged enemy mage.

I suppose this will stop being so much of a problem when the mage gets beyond the sort of level where spells such as magic missile and chromatic orb are maxed out. I shouldnt complain, though; it's these sort of difficulties that make the wild mage a challenging and fun class to play. When Irenicus' dungeon is out of the way the first stop is going to be wherever I can get some nice high level magic scrolls so I can have lots more fun with Nahal's Reckless Dweomer :D

I learned today that wild surges can be bad if you use magic in the city after i got

    wild surge: COW!

Which killed 5 civilians and i lost a crap load of reputation

    Wild Mages are indeed great!
I am currently going through BG2 with a party of two Wild Sorcerers (SK'ed, because I really prefer the Sorcerers type of spellbook over the mage's) And it's a HOOT! :)

My male Mage just got turned into a she :) I laughed my ass off at that one, but I now I'm kinda hoping the exact same thing will happen, only changing him back into a male ;)

    Oh, Wild Mages totally rock!

I am playing with one thorough SoA at the moment, and she's a blast!
Squirrels and other fun things... yippee.

Anyways, the pros definitely outweight the cons.

Faragon, can you please explain to me how you exactly got a wild sorcerer with the use of shadow keeper.

    Thanks in advance

    Pretty simple actually:

    1) Build your character.
    2) Pick your Spells, but keep in mind you'll want to change one lvl1 and a lvl2 spell into the specialist spells later.
    3) With Shadowkeeper, change the sorcerers kit from "true class" to "wild mage"
    4) Change one of your 1st level spells into Reckless Dweomer.
    5) Change one of your 2nd level spells into Chaos Shield.
    6) Have Fun!

btw, I found out the sex change thing isn't permanent. Sleep once and it'll wear off. (At least, it did for me.)

There is one thing I came across just yesterday... The lvlup to lvl 8 works just fine, had no problem there, but when I ascended to lvl 9, I couldn't pick any spells. It said I had to pick some of my own school. Doesn't really matter, all you have to do is add a 3rd and 4th level spell to your spellbook using shadowkeeper, some more hp and some lore...

I do wonder why it went okay for lvl 8 and doesn't for lvl 9... Anybody?

IMO, the main problem with Wild Mages is that the wild effect table is the same for offensive and defensive spells: in fact, getting a high result might be VERY annoying if you get a powerful spell which helps your enemies or damages your allies. Of course the same applies to bad results, but this means that all bonuses on the wild roll are very little useful.

  19. I love Wild mages. Better than any school since they get bonus spells like schools do but they don't have an opposition school. I love getting Wild Surges unless I'm casting level 8/9 spells because I only have a few of them therefore I can't cast again and probably the battle will be screwed.
