What I'd like to know is what weapons (or weapon combinations) you'd use if you were going to play a vanilla fighter, wizard slayer, beserker, or vanilla ranger.

Note that I didn't say paladins, any of their associated kits, archers, stalkers, beastmasters, or kensai.

Those kits are pretty straightforward in weapon selection. All paladins go for Carsomyr or Purifier, stalkers and beastmasters are limited in equipment, and a kensai dual-wielding katanas has been discussed ad naseum.

Basically, I'm wondering first if you prefer to dual wield, wield a two handed weapon, or go for sword and shield, and then what weapons you tend to use. If you want to be especially helpful, you could even breakdown your weapon choices early in the game, like what you use throughout most of SoA, and then what you switch to in ToB.

I either go for a halberd or for dual axe's. Maybe throw in some battlehammers, but no swords.

But early on in the game I go for the sword and shield style. As soon as my armour is any good I go for dual-wielding or twohanded.

I prefer weapon+shield style to two handed or two weapon style. My stronger (melee) warrior has so good AC that only few enemies are able to hit him.
My choice: SoA: Flail of Ages +3, Crom Faeyr +5.
ToB: Flail +5, Storm Star, good swords (do not want to list their names now) and Wave Halberd +4 against Burning Men and Salamanders :D
Although you have to pay attention to not miss the parts, Equalizer is a weak item. Never used it.
In spite of this I solve most of the serious situations and battles with my Sorcerer only, leaving my other party members back.

My fave used to be dual weilding but i've kind of gone off it a bit. I'm all for the two handed weapons now.

Early game i use lirlicor then warblade late SoA and then switch to Staff of the Ram in ToB - I kinda like the look of staves.

If dualling, i go for crom faeyr (off hand) and Flail of ages +3 (+5) switching to mace of disruption/ runehammer respectivly when needed.

    A bit :yot: but...

What do you thnk is better, single weapon or sword and shield?
Single - Double chance of getting critical hit and AC bonus
against - AC bonus from shield, improved missile defence and special abilites from shield.
I think the Sword and shield looks better - what do ya think?

    Depends on your class.

Warriors: Single Weapon. I take better critical threat range over AC any day, especially when AC can be boosted by other items.

Any Priest, Fighter/Mage, Cleric/Mage: Sword and Shield. The extra bonus vs. missile weapons means bye-bye spell disruption from arrows, without having to waste a spell on "Protection from Normal Missiles." Combined with the Fortress Shield (+7 vs. missiles) and the Boots of Avoidance (+2 vs. missiles), you pretty much become immune to all but critical hits.

Any Theif Combo: Single Weapon. Theives need all the melee help they can get, and the increased critical makes their backstabs all the more effective. Plus, they need to be able to switch back and forth between bows and blades quickly.

If not a cleric, I use Single weapon style, and backing up with a bow. I found that to be the best combo for me...

Both two-handed and dual-wieldind works well for me. My party often have both of them as I don't like to waste good weapon(got to put all of them to use right?) For example, the crom faeyr dual-wielding with answerer or the likes and most of the two-handed weapons found in TOB.
Maybe, another factor that I will consider is the strength. If char(a) have more strength than char(b), char(a) will be my two-handed wielder and char(b) will be most likely dual-wielding crom faeyr and another weapon.

For the Wizard Slayer speed is of the essence. Belm and Kundane dual wielded and you will disrupt mages with no problems.

Once you get the Whirlwind attacks you can then switch to Sword and Shield, one handed or two handed styles since you can get 10 attacks per round anyway.

I'm not really that fond of two handed weapons. I mean: How many good weapons are there really? Carsomyr, Ravager and some Spear.. Sure, there are other good two handed swords, but if I even use them, I would go for the best (Carsomyr).

I usually have 1 guy for two handed weapons and three for dual-wielding (I like to use all the good weapons). I dislike sword and shield style for everyone but Aerie.. It would be nice if there were some decent shields, but you can usually put a sword with better enchantments in the off-hand.
Single weapon style seems like a waste, because you can only use one good weapon (instead of two).

A vanilla fighter and berserker are virtually the same to me equipment-wise (I wouldn't let them use missile weapons anyway). I would let them dualwield, because they can't use carsomyr they won't have two-handed weapons with me.
I like the idea of a dwarven berserker dualwielding axes, but it's too bad there aren't many good axes. If the character was evil, I'd probably let him dualwield the angurvadal with the blackrazor.
The same goes for the vanilla ranger by the way. I don't really like them (except minsc), because they're just weaker fighters who can hide in shadows (yay!), but not backstab and have some druid spells.

A wizardslayer should probably dualwield the answerer with the belm or kundane. This will give him a lot of hits and a lot of cool on-hit effects. More hits for the WS is nice, since each hit inflicts +10% spell failure.
When GWW kicks in, replace the belm with the foebane or angurvadal..

For a pure fighter, I like to have him use axes and shields. The big shields in the later parts of the game are handy (especially the one that reflects beholder rays), and axes can be either melee or thrown, which is cool -- kind of a 2 for one deal. The same can be said of the wizard slayer. For a berserker, well, given his insane disregard for life, having him dual wield Crom Faeyr and the axe of the unyielding is the best!
I've often thought of giving a wizard slayer grand mastery in darts, which may sound stupid, but the more hits he inflicts (4 shots per round, IIRC) the more chance he has to disrupt spellcasting, right?

I go with two swords. Occasionally if I like an axe I'll use that instead of a sword.

well, i just began to try out different weapon types and combinations.....

i created 6 fighters who was proficient in different weapon types and played through bg2 with them.

    flail\axe
    katana\scimitar
    halberd or long bows

    and so on......

i ended using pretty interesting combinations.

axe of the unyielding is pretty good and so is storm star.

but normally, when dual wielding i prefer weapons with enemy hurting effects in main hand and a weapon that gives the player char bonuses in off hand.

when using a weapon with a shield or using two handed weapons, i prefer weapons that have effects that does somethig with the enemy.

celestial fury is a good main hand weapon because it have a chance to stun the enemy while blackrazor is a exellent off hand weapon because of the bonuses it gives to your character.

when it comes to single weapon or two handed style i prefer weapons that have effect that does something to the enemy.

oh yes, gotta tell this........club of detonation sucks :S

I'm in complete agreement on that stupid club -- and the same thing goes for that sword that occasionally lets loose a fireball as well. With all the cool weapons out there, you don't need one that can end up damaging your character and party!
For similar reasons, I never use The Answerer -- it is too slow!
