Dude, solo assasins rock! In Tob you can easily have an AC -12, Assasination ability, backstab 7X!!!
Why would it suck?! If they had just a little better proficiencies they would be by far the best kit in the game.

Assassins rock, but Assassin/Mages are even better! But then again, you can always cast spells from scrolls with the Use Any Item ability...so this is kinda obsolete.

Sure, low-level assassins might kind of suck since your skills and backstab multiplier are pretty low. But once you get to 10+ you could solo with a moderate difficulty, and at 20+ it's cake.

Mine is a Assasin/Mage wielding Tuigan Bow+1 and Celestial Fury or The Answerer +4.
I'v played power-no-reload-solo on Extremly Hard with an unboosted char and kicked butt.
The only trouble i had was with the dragons.
Poison your weapon/bow cast Improved Haste. They drop like flies :)

Well this is a creative thread so I think I will just add my two cents...

Assassins are the best thief kit imho. If you want a fighting thief dual or multiclass dont pick the swashbuckler, the loss of backstabbing hurts. Thieves should backstab all the time :)

I disagree, Bounty Hunters are the best thief kit around... Just the trap laying ability that they possess... omfg. It isnt even funny. The fights that you can prepare... bwahah, not a pretty sight, if you know what I mean. Especially with the higher trap laying abilities :)

As for myself, I think that thief kits are the best in the game. None of them is useless, so a single-class thief should NEVER be a True Class.

-Assassin: I don't like backstabbing, but I can't help but recognise that having one in your party is just like subtracting at least one enemy from each battle.

-Swashbuckler: The best advantage is the disadvantage. If you are planning to use your thief for something other than backstabbing, take this instanctly.

-Bounty Hunter: If you have SoA, fine. Trap-setting is a VERY powerful strategy with certain monsters. You won't be able to use it often, but those times it will ease your way a lot. But with ToB, it becomes useless: first, the number of traps allowed in a certain area is fixed; second, all thieves get high-level traps which are far more powerful than the Bounty Hunter's.

Yup, but the Bounty Hunter still has those neat lil effects that come with all his traps... and also, the Bounty Hunter gets those traps too you know...

  12. I love assassins. The only class I pick for a thief. And when they are of really high level, you can pull off almost 200 damage.

Thinking about kensai/thieves...if you have more than 1 attack per round and/or if you are dual wielding, when you backstab someone do all the attacks in the first round (even with the off hand) get the 5x multiplier?

Plus, I have heard that the condition for a weapon to be usable for backstabbing is it being a melee weapon usable by thieves. This means you can backstab with a staff? (Assassin/Mage with the staff of the magi...bwahahahah)

No, you cannot backstab with a staff, nor with a bow or a mace.... you can only backstab with following weapons:
    Shortsword
    Longsword
Scimitar (and all the sub types of it)
    Daggers
    Katanas
    Clubs
    that's all if I don't remember wrong...

    [IMG] Bastet,
you're perfectly right. This is aboud the oddest bug in BG-2 :D Backstabbing with a blunt instrument is indeed complete nonsense ... :almostmad::mad::flaming::toofar:

Oh well, just join the club of the rightous non-clubbers and keep your thief pure and don't use clubs. Don't degrade your thief to a backclubbing thug.
