[IMG] My choppiness problems with BG2 have returned with vengeance it seems. After doing a reformat and some other things, I had thought that my problem had disappeared (and had played a full game of BG2 without problem), but now today they are back.

The only noteworthy thing that I've done between when it was non-choppy and now is install and play Planescape:Torment. This makes me wonder if PS:T might change some setting on my computer that could possibly alter the performance of BG2? If it makes a difference I'm using windows XP.

Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated. With the release of IA 4.3 coming up soon I would really, really, really like to have a working BG2!

If PS:T probably is not the culprit, then does anyone have any tips on what could be? Are there any color settings or anything like that that could possibly improve performance?

I am using a laptop with windows XP, 40GB hard drive of which 28.7GB is free, 228MB RAM, AMD Sempron Processor (supposed to be 1.1GhZ but for some bizarre reason my system properties says it is 546MhZ), ATI Radeon Xpress 200M processor.

Are you playing with any mods currently? I've found that playing IA 4.2 on my machine (which is around 10x more powerful than yours) got a bit choppy in a few places, typically with a lot of enemies on the screen. And there's the whole bag of holding concern (which I think you're aware of).

I can't imagine why PS:T would cause BG not to run properly, so I'm guessing that isn't the issue. You could always try uninstalling PS:T to test that theory. I'm assuming that drive fragmentation isn't an issue (I think you said your install was fairly recent).

How choppy is choppy? I'm trying to get an idea on the "pain scale" (10 being unplayable, 1 being super playable). And is it all the time, or only in certain situations?

Have you messed around with your game settings (BGConfig) to see if lowering settings gains you anything?

Just a few thoughts for you to chew on....

As even you've posted in that topic, I'm sure you have read the tips in the relevant BWL thread (especially thetruth's summary). How did you restore your data after the format? Perhaps the source of the problem roots there.

Does your hard disk work intensively during these slowdowns? (I.e. practically, is there terrible swapping?)

[IMG] I have a new higher-end computer that vastly exceeds all of the game's recommendations, so I had all the options set for maximum performance. Yet despite all that BG2-ToB was very choppy. I tinkered with the configuration options and finally met with success when I disabled the 3D acceleration. Now the game runs flawlessly.

3D Acceleration is probably the problem, like the previous poster says. My game is always slowish with 3D Acceleration enabled, probably because BG2 doesn't use Direct3D.
