[IMG] I recently renewed my interest in playing Baldur's Gate. All of a sudden, I have a bug that won't allow me to play.

One of the icons at the bottom of the screen (usually the guard or weapon icon) will flash uncontrollabley and I can't select anything else.

I feel like I've tried everything - installed, uninstalled, checked my settings.

Can't figure it out, any advice?
    Thanks

I encountered a similar problem with my windows taskbar at the upper screen. Putting it to lower screen again, the place where it should be, solved my problem. Hope that helps.

Edit: Headbanger, thanks for the terminology advive ;)

Maybe the problem is solved in a Patch. It's indeed the Windows-taskbar that gives the problem, maybe changing the place of the taskbar (to left, right or upper-screen) would also help.

Thanks for your replies. I will try to move my task bar around and see if it helps. (It currently is at the bottoms of the screen)

I did have the patch installed. I will also try uninstalling/reinstalling one more time -perhaps the 3rd (or is it 4th) time is the charm.

Also, things like icq, ud agent, and other programs that run in the background waiting for you to do something that will make them open up fully, it is worth closing them and seeing if it makes a difference

[IMG] Alright, now I've tried moving the task bar, the patch and everything!

I just can't make this work. I'm so sad.

If anyone else has any ideas, lemme know. Thanks

It sounds a little bit like some of the graphic problems I've heard about in other forums. Perhaps you could try running the BGConfig programme again and setting the screen to 800*600 and turning off all 3D acceleration. Also, what screen settings are you using in workbench? It might help to set these (resolution and colour depth) to the same as BG2 before running BG2. Finally, I guess your graphic card drivers are all ok and up to date. Other games are still running ok for example.

Finally, your original post suggested that BG2 used to run ok but not since you reinstalled it. Can you think of any changes to your systems or settign that you have made in between times? This might give us more of a clue as to what is causing the problem.

PS Just had another thought. Do you get this problem when you start a new game or when you try loading an older saved game? I am just wondering if your old save game has become corrupted. If you haven't already tried, see if it works when you start a new game.

[IMG] Thanks for your reply Slappy. I currently have my resolution set to 1024x768. I will change it to 800x600 and see if it helps.

I've tried the 3D acceleration on & off also.

Of course the strangest thing is that yes, I have played months ago for hours and hours with no problems. Now, no luck.

The only thing I can think of that I've installed since then is the game Alice. I will try to uninstall that and see if that helps.

PS - yep, after discovering the problem with one of my old games, I tried a new game with the same problem. I've also deleted all my saved games.

    Ahhhhhhrhg

[IMG] BG-2 is oficially released in 800 x 600 resolution though it can be set to 1024 x 768 resolution.

This is a kind of hairy since it depends on the abilities of your graphics accelerator and driver aou use ... and that´s why it isn´t recommendet to do so. I play BG-2 in 800X600 and Im satisfied with the resuls. Good luck.

[IMG] I had to post a follow up to this questions about the problems I had been having.

I still don't know what's wrong with BGII, becuase everytime it starts up there is still one slot icon that flickers.

However, I pressed F5 and it solved it. It's got to be one of the dumbest fixes for things I have ever heard and I'm totally irritated that I lost several hours trying to figure this out when I could have been playing!

Anyway, thanks for everyone who replied!

Glad to hear that you fixed the problem, even though the method was so bizarre. Isn't modern technology a wonderful thing

[IMG] Aaah, I once solved a hang-up problem on my computer by sacrificing old floppy discs to digital (godess of electronics) on a witchfire on a friday 13th at full moon ... absolutely foolproof. Always helps.

[IMG] If you are running a Windows desktop in "View as Webpage" maode then you will tend to get this flickering - seems to have something to do with both Explorer (the Windows Shell) and BG2 trying to use the DirectX drivers at the same time.

F5 will work (refresh shortcut) as will turning off the Webpage desktop mode.
