Kabuki bard kit?

    [​IMG] Im thinking of trying to learn WeidU and making a Kabuki class. Im thinking of putting him under bard since they are actors, dance & sing as well including specialized items for him and portraits of a kabuki-themed fighter from the Samurai Showdown series. Any thoughts & feedback?

    Kabuki? Those japanese actorswith the white faces? They don't sound like they'd be much chop in a fight (unless they'd been secretly learning ninja skills in their spare time). They'd be like some sort of Monk / Bard / Kensai I suppose.

    I read in an old military textbook that some kabuki actors, during the Sengoku era, learned martial arts and tumbling because of the roles were very physical and that some travelling troupes had at least 1 or 2 spies working for a certain lord.

    Kabuki was form of theatre dating back 100s of years in Japan. It's detailed sets, costumes, acting styles influenced many things in modern Japan.

    How about disabling their spell-casting ability and improving their fighting ability? Make them gain att/round at slightly lower rate than the fighter (like 1/2 per 10 level, start at level 10, so they would get 2 att/round bonus at level 40), this won't make them overly powerful because spell-casting is a LOT to sacrifice.

    Their song will advance as the bard's song (and preferably like the slightly improved one in Avenger's aPack mod).

    And some other abilities to make this class more interesting would be nice too (some abilities that make this class more tactical, and not just a fighter offshot).

    Nice idea, no?

    Great idea? YES!

    The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of eliminating spell casting and focusing on innate abilities. Dancing would be a slightly better version of Blade Spin. There could be different songs. One to terrorize the enemy (songs of violence and brutality) one to inspire the allies with bonuses and temporary abilities (boosts in str, thaco etc)another song that heals the soul and body (heals teammates)

    higher weapon bonuses for halberds, spears & katanas maybe...

    so far everything is shaping out just nicely.

    btw: here is the portait I plan to use for the kit. Kabuki

    Now, this may annoy some players but im thinking of also forcing a skin color & hair color change to the avatar & paper doll. In some kabuki plays, the hero has flaming red hair while the villain has either dark blue or black hair. Thoughts on that aspect?

    The Kabuki kit sounds awesome altogether. I love seeing stuff inspired by Japanese culture in any kind of game.


    And besides, I totally dig the portrait.

    I got the image from a site dedicated to a console rpg called Suikoden. I know it doesnt look like the traditional actor but I think the look of the fellow in the picture would represent how the kabuki actors would appear in Kara-Tur.

    I realize he is wearing a mask there but I couldnt find the image the felt "right" you know?

    I'm really liking this concept for a kit! Having recently gotten heavily into Japanese culture I'm practically drooling :) . If you feel up to making custom items i think you should definitely leech the idea of masks from rednik's thread! Although you may want to acidentally-on-purpose forget that women were forbade to act :) (yes, i read the information link- most interesting). AS for the hair colour change i dont know how you'd do that (but i dont know a lot of things :) ) but i think its a good idea. Maybe the hero's and villains should start off with (or get at some point) a variation of the same mask, which adds the hair colour change along with other abilities? eg. the villain would get a horror spell, as his mask strike fear into the heart of... things... so, um, yeah. What do you think?
