I read over the Outdoorsman skill again, and it DOES replace a lot of ranger type stuff. Finding things, identifying them, etc.

    Wheee... Gecko Skinning? fun fun!

By all means Byclaf - I'm nowhere near started yet. Just don't espect anythign to happen anytime soon...I've only recently found the rules and I've got exams coming up. I just jumped in with this a bit quickly since it was two things I'd been thinking of for a long time - a) trying my hand at DMing, b) a Fallout based game. However, I'll definetely try to get something going once the exams are through.

My guess is that you'd probably have to print it out, unfortunately.

I'll make a quick post of what's in the background as I see it, with emphasis on how it'll affect your characters. Bear in mind that it's not set in stone and could certainly be tweaked.

You live in a village which was bombed out in the war and resettled shortly after by bands of survivalists. Nobody knew the village's original name, and they didn't see any point in giving it one besides "Home". That was about one hundred years ago. As the scenario starts the village has some technology, but most is in pretty bad condition. The irrigation pumps are the only things that really work, and that's because everything else has been cannibalised when they needed parts. Most people in the town have either zip-guns or pipe-rifles, although the smith/technician is trying to persuade them into switching to crossbows and spearguns because he's runnning out of the chemicals he needs to make bullets. A few families may still have functional hunting rifles and shotguns, and a few rounds of ammo, but they're rare. Most people in the town are farmers, although there is also a tanner, a tailor, a butcher, a doctor, a smith/technician and a small force of rangers who hunt down wild animals the farmers can't handle by themselves. The town is run by a hereditary mayor/sherrif. There isn't much law, although people generally respect the mayor/sherrif - a small tax is paid for the upkeep of the village, and any crimes against the village are generally dealt with by vigilantes before the sherrif can respond.

There might be a pub, although the way I've got it pictured just now, most drinking/socialising happens on private property - some farmer's managed to rig up a moonshine still and he invites his buddies round for drinks when the work is done.

How should we figure out what we start with?

I think i'd like to start with a bolas, maybe 2 throwing knives, a couple of throwing stars, and maybe a spear. That sounds like too much though. It's really up to the GM.

Phew, I was getting worried that there wasn't going to be a pub there for a minute.
Ah, duh, how could I not think of printing it out  I wonder if my scanners up the the job of scanning anything though.

By the way, have any of you looked at the extended skills document? I don't want to start with all the detail - just about every skill getting broken down into about four new ones- but I quite like the idea of restricted skills. What do you guys think?

Another thing, I was thinking we could maybe roleplay the introduction to the village with the characters as kids and an NPC telling them the history whie they ask questions.

I glanced at the expanded skills, and you're right, there are too many. But i do like restricted skills.
How would one of us even -know- what an energy weapon is?

Just now I'm thinking of sometime round about 2200 - midway between Fallout 1 and Fallout 2. The village is meant to be pretty remote, and know nothing of the outside world (to save me from deciding where exactly it is until I have to :) ) So if you are outcasts from Reno you would have to have stumbled on the place by accident, and have some reason not to settle in Broken Hills, Redding etc. Other than that, I'm cool with it - it should be fairly obvious you're going to have to leave the village sometime, and being the only two who know anything about civilisation beyond the village would make you an obvious choice.

I don't have anything concrete yet, but this map of Northern California covers pretty much the same area as Fallout 2 - San Fran, Mariposa, Redding, Modoc, even Klamath... http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/united_states/california_north_90.jpg
Anyway's I'm thinking about putting the village somewhere in Nevada. Unfortunately, the only maps I've been able to find are all about Vegas and Reno - so, see that town Fallon just east of Reno? See all the rivers and suchlike around it? The village will most likely be quite close to there - of course the villagers won't know exactly - and the world will have changed after the war....
