"Well, you know guys...and idea could fit into this category...I'm not sure. It does seem like something that could fit both categories. It can be any shape or size and grow or shrink with time. You know, like a plan or something. And also, it is something you can see even though it has no substance. I think the solution may be either 'idea' or 'plan'."

"The other thing I was thinking of was a hole. . . But they don't shrink with time. Maybe, it's a pathway or an opening. . . yeah. . . I think that might work."

As if speaking in unison, Thrimmel and Sarval said the answer was a hole. Thrimmel spoke the word in Elven and the stone door slowly sank into the floor. The next chamber was merely a ten foot square room with another stone door on the opposite wall. Khaira determined that the room was trapped while Elstarius noticed two secret doors, one on each side of the entrance. The trap would merely open the two doors. Thrimmel entered the room and approached the next door to see what riddle awaited them. As indicated, the two secret doors opened up, sliding into the floor. Elstarius, not wanting to be harmed by the trap in the room, retreated back through the previous chamber. Not remembering to follow the diamond shaped stones in her rush, she stepped onto an oval shaped one and triggered a fire trap. Everyone in the party except Thrimmel was burned by the trap. Syanne used the Wand of Simberal to heal the damage caused by the trap.

The runes engraved into the door read, “There are four brothers in this world that were all born together. The first runs and never wearies. The second eats and is never full. The third drinks and is always thirsty. The fourth sings a song that is never good.” As Thrimmel read the runes etched into the door, he thought he heard the sound of insect swarms coming from the two side passages. As he asked the others if they too heard the sounds, he was hushed by Sarval who was contemplating the new riddle. Soon, they all could hear the insect sounds and on Khaira’s suggestion, they all moved carefully back into the previous chamber and spoke the command word to close the door, resetting the secret doors as well.

A discussion of how to defeat the insect swarms ensued. Luring the insects into the trapped chamber was one idea and Sarval, trying to figure out the other traps in the chamber set off the circular stone trap causing an acid to be sprayed into the chamber. Again the party took damage. The door was opened. This time Thrimmel managed to disable the trap before entering. Elstarius, having solved the riddle, spoke the command words, “Water, Fire, Earth, Wind.” The stone door slowly slipped into the floor revealing a large chamber.

The purpose of the chamber became immediately apparent. A circle of protection and a pentagram of summoning were etched into the floor. Arcane runes were drawn about and one large candle stood at each of the points of the pentagram. Three more stone doors with riddles awaited the party also. In the center of the circle of protection a name was carved, Antalaya Tamoreya. Approaching the first of the three stone doors, Thrimmel read the following riddle, “Though not a number, I am one with eight to spare, lest I lose my one.” The party determined the answer to be a cat and Elstarius spoke the command. The door did not slip into the floor however, instead, a huge Dire Tiger was summoned to the center of the pentagram and it looked hungry.

The ensuing battle was sheer chaos. During the initial attack, Thrimmel, Elstarius, and Syanne hit the beast with arrows. Khaira got tangled up trying to ready her bow and Sarval cast a color spray spell which had no effect on the creature. Thrimmel decided that his greatsword would be more useful as the beast pounced on top of Sarval, striking him with one huge claw and biting him as well. While Thrimmel moved in to attack with his sword, Elstarius repeated the command word for the door, thinking it may recall the beast. To the party’s dismay, it merely summoned another Dire Tiger, causing everyone in the party to figure that they were all dead. Syanne called out for everyone to get into the protection circle and spoke the name carved into the floor. Sarval lured the tiger attacking him over the entrance door and spoke the command to close it. The tiger was crushed by the door and Sarval was separated from the rest of the party, bleeding but alive. The remaining tiger was dispelled by the demon which appeared on the command of Syanne.

The Succubus faced the party members in the chamber. During the ensuing conversation between the party and the demon, the party members learned that Diamasin’s Star was located in an ancient gnome enclave, Jzadirune, located beneath the city of Vhalantru. Information on the one remaining gem they needed to recover, the emerald, could be obtained at a place called Guardian’s Grove. The demon being held by Diamasin’s star was a Maurezhi, a beast that grew in strength by consuming the body and soul of its victims. They were then told that they could find out the name of the demon through the proper door and that finding the proper door was key to their success. Khaira then released the demon from the summoning. The last two doors were located on the north wall, one at each end. In the door on the western end was carved the following riddle, “What force and strength cannot get through, I with a gentle touch can do. And many in the street would stand, were I not a friend at hand.” The riddle carved into the eastern door read, “I can sizzle like bacon, I am made with an egg, I have plenty of backbone, but lack a good leg, I peel layers like onions, but still remain whole, I can be long, like a flagpole, yet fit in a hole.”

Everyone in the party receives 900 experience. Sarval receives a bonus of 250.

"Well the second one is snake, that is simple enough. I wouldn't say it if I were any of you, however. We're liable to end up with giant, poisonous snakes. The first one...hmm..."

Perhaps the first is a key? The succubus almost said as much.

"'Key' might work. Maybe the riddle speaks of death? The 'force' and 'strength' parts make me wonder when it comes to 'key'. At the same time 'friend at hand' is kind of tough for death. However, death may be considered a friend since it prevents overpopulation. I'm just not sure..."

"...could also be wealth." Sarval muses. "Wealth often gets through things that strength and force cannot. It also prevents people from sleeping, or standing, in the streets. I think 'key' is the first to try, but then the others."

Having determined that it was the door in the western end of the north wall that they wanted to explore, Sarval approached it and said the word “Key” in elven. As with the others, the door slowly slipped into the floor. Beyond was a 10 foot long hall that ended in yet another stone door with elven runes etched into it. As Syanne and Elstarius were waiting for Thrimmel and Khaira to check the new area for traps, Sarval ignored the pause and stepped into the hall. Immediately the hall filled with flames. Sarval’s reflexes took over and he jumped back saving himself from certain death. He hit the floor unconscious, drawing the attention of Syanne who used the Wand of Simberal to heal him. Without any further delay, Khaira located and disabled the trap that filled the hall with flame.

Syanne approached the door and read the next riddle. “Born Motherless and Fatherless, into this world without a sin. Made a loud roar as I entered, and never spoke again.” Sarval thought the answer was perhaps Volcano, but when he spoke the word in elven, the door did not open. Elstarius believed the answer was Thunder and when the others agreed, she spoke the word and the door opened. Before the party was a two leveled chamber. Six square pillars supported the extremely high ceiling in the lower portion of the chamber, the upper portion held a sarcophagus. Thrimmel could find no traps and The party began to slowly enter the chamber, Syanne and Elstarius first followed by the others. Elstarius noticed a secret panel in one of the pillars on the eastern side of the chamber. Thrimmel found a trap, but was hesitant to disarm it so they moved on to the sarcophagus. Sarval found a name carved into one end, Aedrinia, while Khaira found another trap. The magical fire trap was certain to detonate if a disarm attempt failed and the party was not certain what to do at this point. Thrimmel searched the remainder of the chamber and found another panel on a pillar, this time on the western side. He found no traps, but just to be on the safe side, Sarval opened the panel while everyone else waited outside the chamber. This panel was not trapped and upon opening contained two items, a map case and a gnomish tool. Sarval called for the others to re-enter the chamber and showed them the gnomish tool. Syanne was preparing to read the runes etched onto the buttons when Sarval decided to open the map case. The fire trap detonated as the case was opened, knocking everyone to the ground, either by reflex action or by explosive force. Khaira was knocked out by the blast and Syanne quickly revived her. Sarval removed the contents of the map case revealing a blank map with the title “The Malachite Fortress, Prison of Sposteg’Ascaes” written across the top in ancient elven.

It was decided that the party would close the door to this chamber and rest inside. Thrimmel pushed one of the buttons on the tool and discovered that it was a key of some kind. Syanne read the runes which were in fact gnomish letters that spelled out JZADIRUNE, the name of the gnomish enclave the succubus had told them about. The next day, Thrimmel decided that he would attempt to disarm the remaining two fire traps in the chamber. Syanne cast endure elements on him and, with everyone else out of the chamber, he went to work. Unfortunately for him, he was unable to disarm either of the two traps. Between attempts, Syanne healed him. Inside the pillar panel was only a piece of parchment that read, “Seek the Malachite Fortress if you dare. The way through Jzadirune will take you there. Use the demons name to banish him back, to the abyss with a big crack.” The contents of the sarcophagus seemed more worth while consisting of 5 scroll cases, one helmet and one necklace. Thrimmel grabbed the helmet, Sarval received the scroll cases, and Syanne held onto the necklace. After gathering up the items, the party made their way back up to the surface.

Finding that no-one had disturbed the area since they entered the tomb, they closed up the tomb and began to make their way toward Guardian’s Grove. Approaching the grove from the north, they were about 200 feet away from a circle of trees when they noticed a gang of nine humanoids inside the circle intent on building a campfire. Thrimmel attempted to sneak up on the group, but one of the humanoids noticed the movement. The humanoids began to prepare for battle; grabbing very large axes, morningstars, swords, and bows. Moving in three separate smaller groups they approached Thrimmel cautiously; one group of four heading toward the right flank while the two largest took the center and a group of three took the left flank.

As the humanoids began to move away from their encampment, everyone in the party could see something moving on the ground near the campfire. It was another humanoid tied up, trying to move away from the camp while its captors were pre-occupied. One other thing everyone could now see, the humanoids were orcs.

"I knew this wand would come in handy. Let's see how many orcs like going to sleep with each casting!" Sarval prepared his wand for some magical fun.

The largest of the Orcs bellowed out some orders in the gutteral language of the orcs. "Drayko, you take the right with Agrikas and Maguka. Rusgar, you take the left with the half breeds; Kokask, Nagvar, and Zorlan. Kaschak and I will take the center. You all know what to do. Drayko, Rusgar; be on the lookout for more and if you spot a spellcaster, take him out first."

Only Elstarius was unable to understand the orders the apparent leader barked out to his followers.

From the group of four, one of the orcs shouted down some grumblings in common. "Don't mind Gristlegape. You know how he gets right before battle. He only calls you half-breeds because that is what you are."

Turn 1: While the orcs were moving out of the depression; Syanne cast Bless on the party, Sarval cast Mage Armor on himself, Khaira cast Ghost Sound on a tree to the east of the party creating the sound of eight fighters yelling out attack cries, Elstarius hid and then moved to the west to get into a flanking position, and Thrimmel fired an arrow at the leader missing him.

Turn 2: The center two orcs moved toward Thrimmel while the orcs on the east headed toward the Ghost Sound diversion and the orcs on the west advanced north. The second of the two orcs in the center fired a crossbow bolt at Thrimmel, missing him and then drew his Greataxe in preparation for a charge. Elstarius continued her westward move into a flanking position while Khaira hid and moved forward a little to prepare to backstab the oncoming center two orcs. Syanne fired off two arrows, one at each of the two center orcs, hitting both. Thrimmel fired again at the leader missing again. Sarval moved up to the edge of the tree line and cast grease in an oval shape in front of Thrimmel.

Turn 3: As the orcs on the east continued their trek toward the diversionary Ghost Sound and the orcs on the west continued to move north, the two orcs in the center charged Thrimmel who was now within their charge range. When the two reached the area of grease created by Sarval’s spell, they both slipped, fell, and slid forward. Their momentum carried them through the grease and they stopped at Thrimmel’s feet. Elstarius was waiting for the western group to make their move toward the action before giving away her position. Syanne fired two more arrows striking again with deadly accuracy while Khaira, seizing the opportunity, moved in and attacked the leader who was now laying prone on the ground face down; Her thrust with the rapier found its mark. Thrimmel, using his greatsword attacked the other of the two prone orcs, striking him also. Sarval retreated back into the trees and moved toward the east.

Turn 4: At this point, the group of orcs approaching from the west turned sharply and began to move in the direction of the action. The Two prone orcs regained their footing and the eastern group still headed toward the Ghost Sound diversion even though the noise had stopped. Elstarius moved up and began firing at the leader of the western group striking him with a critical shot. Syanne continued her pelting of the two main leaders with her arrows while Khaira again attacked the leader from behind, this time she missed as he moved to regain his footing. Thrimmel attacked the other and also missed as the orc regained its footing. Sarval continued to move through the trees eastward.

Turn 5: At this point, the orcs approaching from the west, three of which could now be seen to be Half-Orcs, charged toward the action. When they hit the area of grease, they too slipped and fell, sliding into the group of combatants. Khaira managed to dodge the sliding mass of bodies, but the orc being attacked by Thrimmel wasn’t so lucky as he fell into the pile. The eastern orcs finally reached the trees and discovered the sound was only a ruse and turned toward the action also. Elstarius fired at the sliding half-orcs and finished off the orc she had been attacking. Syanne continued her deadly firing while Khaira took the opportunity to thrust her rapier through the throat of a helpless half-orc. Thrimmel missed the leader with his attack and Sarval cast a Web on the orcs approaching from the east and they became trapped in the sticky mass of web-like strands.

Turn 6: With many of the orc band prone on the ground or trapped in a Web spell, the battle turned in the favor of the party. Thrimmel was unfortunately hit by a massive blow from the Orc Leader’s Greataxe, reducing to half with the single blow. Syanne fired two more arrows, this time both at the leader. He first dropped to his knees and then fell face first to the ground apparently dead. Thrimmel attacked the other of the two center orcs and ran him through with a thrust from his greatsword. Elstarius and Khaira were trying to finish off the half-orcs lying on the ground, which was proving to be more difficult than they had thought. Sarval moved toward the orcs trapped in his web spell.

Turn 7: With the tide of battle clearly in their favor, Elstarius and Khaira continued their attacks on the half-orcs. Syanne moved up and cast a Cure Moderate Wounds on Thrimmel while he made sure the leader was dead by thrusting his greatsword through its neck. Sarval fired at the apparent leader of the eastern group who after being struck by two arrows ceased his struggling.

Turn 8: Syanne, Elstarius, Khaira, and Thrimmel finished off the remaining two half-orcs while Sarval killed one more of the orcs trapped in the web.

With only one orc left, and it being trapped in the web area created by Sarval, the party surrounded the helpless orc and after Sarval plugged it with an arrow, Syanne began to question it. From the orc, they learned that the creature tied up and struggling in the burlap sac was the last member of a dwarven party that the orc clan had ambushed. The dwarf made the promise of great treasure in return for his life, so the Orc leader let him live. Within the troop of orcs, there were two orcs that had the ability to cast spells, one sorcerer and one Shaman.

After completing the questioning, Elstarius knocked out the trapped orc with a blunted arrow and then took up a lookout position while Thrimmel waited for the webs to dissipate so he could tie up the one remaining orc. Sarval and Syanne moved to the orc encampment where they untied the dwarf and Khaira moved around the battlefield picking up anything she found of value.

Syanne and Sarval learned that the dwarf was called Aldhem Thunderfist. He was part of an adventuring group called the Ready Axes. They had been hired by a local aristocrat from Vhalantru, Ronin Taskerhill, to retrieve three large gemstones. They had just recovered one of them, a large emerald, when they were ambushed by the Orc Clan. Sarval and Syanne had Aldhem show the gem and noticed that it fit the description of the one missing from Diamasin’s Star. Sarval began to reprimand Aldhem for aiding in the release of a demon, but Syanne calmly explained to the dwarf the importance of the gems. Aldhem further explained that he met with Ronin Taskerhill in The Tipped Tankard. As the conversation with the dwarf was coming to an end, the web spell dissipated. Thrimmel and Elstarius tied up the still unconscious orc, searched the three bodies, and took all the valuable equipment they had except for the still living orcs armor and bracers. Sarval arrived at the location of the remaining orc just as they finished the searching of the bodies. Syanne, meanwhile began to check out the orc’s backpacks when she noticed that the large circular stone in the depression has runes carved into it. There was also an arrow of sorts located in the center of the stone. It could be turned to point toward one of the six lines of runes. The sun had dipped below the horizon as Syanne read the runes carved into the stone. Each of the lines repeated a word (or word pair) six times. They were as follows; Acid, Fire, Ice, Lightning, Thunder, and Positive Planar.

Each party member receives 1250 experience points.

"This one is the 'spell-caster' that the orc mentioned." Sarval muttered under his breath. "I wonder what magical stuff he has." Sarval searches the orc (who had a morningstar) checking for wands, scrolls, amulets, bracers and anything else he thinks could be magical.

"By the way, Thrimmel and Elstarius, did you happen to find anything that needs to be checked for magic. I may as well get it all over in one shot. You might ask our musical thief to empty her pockets so I can check the stuff she just took as well..."

"I think I'll check out these other scrolls I got as well", Sarval decides.

After releasing the dwarf from the burlap bag the Orcs had tied him up in, the group proceeded to gather the Orc’s equipment together. Sarval used a Detect Magic to check all the items for magic. Following that, the items were disbursed and the party headed back toward the city. Thrimmel and Sarval thought they saw someone in the trees so the party cautiously proceeded into the forest. Syanne found a note tacked to a tree which read: “Meerthan Eliothlorn of the Striders of Fharlanghn would like to meet with you. Skie's treasure's, noon, three days hence.”

Along the way back to the city, the party discussed their potential courses of action. They all wanted to find out why Ronin Taskerhill wanted the gemstones and what his role is. They were also curious about the note and who the Striders of Fharlanghn were and what they wanted. It was decided that they would visit Skie’s Treasures upon reaching the city. Perhaps the proprietor could enlighten them as to the Striders.

They arrived at the city gates a few hours before sunrise, having traveled all night. The guard was leaning against the wall, snoozing. Syanne made a loud noise to wake the guard. Sarval made a comment, jokingly, about a band of Orcs entering the city. The guard was not amused in the least, telling Sarval to be quiet. He informed Syanne that all of the shops in the city were closed and would not open until daylight, but that Skie would sometimes open up at odd times for the “them rangers.” Sarval again made some offhand remark about the guard and the guard told him to enter the city and find out what happens to those who enter without permission. Not hearing the last portion of the comment, Sarval proceeded through the gates followed by Khaira. They set of an alarm and were caught in a net, suspended in the entryway. The guard pulled a lever and released the two after warning them not to attempt to enter without permission in the future.

After entering the city, the party headed straight to Skie’s Treasures. The shop was closed and no light could be seen within. Khaira was checking around the exterior of the shop while Sarval approached the door and knocked on it. After a few minutes, a light could be seen within and then they heard a voice from within. After a brief conversation, Skie, a retired gnome illusionist, opened up the door and let the party into the shop. He was used to adventuring parties waking him up in the middle of the night and didn’t mind, being a retired adventurer himself. Skie informed the party that the Striders were simply customers of the shop and he never knew when they would show up. Khaira inquired about the possibility of having some magic items identified, but Skie informed her that he didn’t know how to cast that spell. He did, however, have a wand of identify that was specifically designed for a bard, it required a successful perform check to activate. He would let it go for 8000 gold. Sarval asked about invisibility scrolls. Skie had a few that he would sell for 600 gold, he had made them himself and they would last for 6 hours each. Sarval offered the Mage Armor/Web scroll in trade, but Skie refused that trade stating that perhaps he would take the scroll and 400 gold.

"Would it be cheaper if you just teach me the spell?" Sarval asks. "All I need to do is copy the spell into my spell book. Would you be willing to allow me to pay for the copying of the spell?"

Skie stared for a moment at Sarval. "Weeelll, I guess I could help you to learn the spell for your own. You give me that combination Mage Armor/Web scroll and I'll scribe you a copy of Invisibility you can transfer into your spell book. Anything else I can do for you fine people?"

“Well actually, we could use that wand, but it’s not even close to being worth the 8000 gp you claim it to be. We bought a wand of color spray for 750 at Sortiarius’ Shop of Wonders in New Jarla, and like Identify, that’s a first level spell. Besides, we have no way of knowing how many charges are still left on it. Not to mention, you say it’s designed for a bard. Your market base lowers it’s value anyways. Fortunately for you, I happen to be a bard and can take it off your hands for say, 4000 gp.”

"You know, Khaira, I can cast Identify like...oh FOUR TIMES A DAY! We probably do not need the Identify wand at all. 4000 gp is a lot of money for a wand we really don't need. If you're really interested in paying that much for a wand, how about a wand of Lightning or Fireballs. Identify is not nearly as worth while as those are."

"At any rate, here is the scroll, Skie. I will copy the Invisibility spell as we agreed."

    "Ah now.....Ronin Taskerhill.

Well, He is the son of Cedrick Taskerhill, one of the wealthiest residents in Vhalantru.

Ronin is somewhat of a dandy if you know what I mean, but he is reputed to be deadly with a blade.

He collects rare gemstones if I remember correctly. He fancies himself to be more knowledgeable than anyone when it comes to rare gems.

I heard that he has been hanging around the Tipped Tankard alot recently."

After determining that they didn’t want to purchase anything from Skie at that moment, the party made their way to the inn to rest and recover. While they were all getting ready to bed down near the hearth, some with bottles of wine or pitchers of ale, they were approached by a middle-aged elf wearing a green cloak. He produced his own bottle of wine and asked if he could join the group in conversation.

He introduced himself as Meerthan Eliothlorn, the local leader of a group called the Striders of Fharlanghn. He further informed them that he believed that his groups mission and theirs were connected. The striders were seeking a kidnapped child that was to be sacrificed to free a powerful demon. The child was the offspring of a demigod, Fharlanghn, their deity. They had been assigned the task of watching over the child until he could take care of himself. At this point, they were in trouble of failing in their mission.

Further discussion revealed that the sorcerer Diamasin was also a member of the Striders of Fharlanghn. Many years ago, he fought with the Lord of the Maurezhi and only through divine intervention was he able to defeat and trap the Demon Lord. Fharlanghn gave to Diamasin a globe called the Star of Fharlanghn (now called the Star of Diamasin). The star can be destroyed by the blood of Fharlanghn or his offspring. If it is destroyed, the Demon Lord will be released and take out his revenge for having been trapped. The ritual sacrifice was to take place in nine days during the full moon.

The group, having determined that Meerthan didn’t know where to locate the cult, or Ronin Taskerhill, simply asked where they could find Meerthan and then retired for the night. Meerthan gave Syanne a bottle of Elven Healing Wine, then departed.

Following a much needed rest, the party headed to the Gurnezarn’s Smithy to see if he could shed some light on their newfound magic weapons. Phalian Gurnezarn was able to tell them what they wanted to know and also made a deal with Syanne for a slightly used magical longsword. The party next made their way to the Tipped Tankard to seek out Ronin or his contact. They arrived just after the tavern opened, they were the first to enter that day. Sarval used two Invisibility spells to conceal himself and Syanne while Khaira simply hid in the shadows. Thrimmel, Elstarius, and Aldhem took up places at the bar and waited for someone to show up.

Fortunately, they didn’t have to wait for long. Aldhem recognized a local thug, Brann, one of Ronin’s lackeys. He approached Brann and informed him that after his group recovered one of the gems, they were waylaid by a clan of orcs and the orcs were now in possession of the gem. Brann simply informed Aldhem that payment would only be made on delivery of the gems and if he couldn’t do it, then Ronin would have to find someone else who could. After the conversation, Brann exited the bar. Thrimmel, Syanne, and Sarval followed the thug while Elstarius, Khaira, and Aldhem waited to see if Ronin would show up.

Brann made his way through the streets of the city and headed to Ghelve’s Locks, there he entered the shop. When Thrimmel and Syanne entered a minute later, Brann was not in the shop, all they saw was a gnome sitting at a table tinkering with a lock. The gnome didn’t seem to notice Thrimmel and Syanne was still invisible. Thrimmel remained hidden and proceeded to investigate the shop. Behind a counter there was a curtain that concealed another room. Thrimmel saw another gnome sitting at a table tinkering with a lock, but no other exits. He then proceeded to open the only other door in the shop. When he did, a gnome sitting in the room called out to Thrimmel asking if he knew how to knock. At this point, the other two gnomes disappeared and the shop owner, Ghelve, approached Thrimmel.

Thrimmel asked the gnome if he saw anyone enter the shop immediately before he had, but the gnome denied that anyone came into the shop. Sarval then entered the shop and caused a ruckus, pretending to be a customer. While Ghelve was distracted by Sarval, Thrimmel and Syanne searched the shop for secret or hidden doors. Syanne found one in the gnomes workshop. When Ghelve finally finished with Sarval, Thrimmel began again to ask pointed questions. The gnome kept denying that anyone entered the shop and when Thrimmel pushed his way past the gnome into the workshop, he cracked. Syanne opened up the secret door at this time and the gnome informed Thrimmel of what he knew. The stairway led to the ancient gnome enclave of Jzadirune, a cursed ancient dwelling for the gnomes of the island. Ronin had somehow fond out about the passage and while searching through Jzadirune, became possessed by a demon. That was trapped in a huge green prison. Thrimmel convinced the gnome, by threats, to aid him by going to the tavern and bringing back his three companions who were there. The gnome complied then closed up his shop and decided to take a vacation. With everyone present, they prepared to enter Jzadirune.

Each member of the party receives 300 experience points.
