Part 3 Spoiler (?)

When we cleared the ice pond area, we ran into some soldiers from Luskan, who greeted my party and informed us that the cave had a dragon in it and that they would charge right in with us and get it, then, when the dragon and wyverns show up, they high-tail it out of combat, leaving my party to be turned into corpse-sickles. After the combat, they return, but one of the soldiers lets something slip about having to kill my party now. When the soldiers' leader is pressed about the statement, he denies it, then the soldiers reveal themselves as dopplegangers and attack. None of this is on the walkthrough solution on this site. Anyone know what is going on?

You could have exposed the doppelgangers earlier if you had gotten the "letter to Captain Mariner" in Targos. You can get the letters by speaking with the first guy in the Temple Pavilion in the town area of Targos. That guy is a doppelganger. He will give you a set of letters to take to the Captain, but you need to talk to the female priest and she will tell you he is a doppelganger and give you some letters to expose Mariner and his men. Then you can kill the doppelganger in the Temple for 300 xp.

Later on in Chapter 2, after you clear out the temple and Nathaniel melts a hole in the ice wall, you will meet up with the forces from Neverwinter and Luskan. Give the letters to Captain Mariner and they will expose him and his men. Then just kill them there for a little more xp. Plus you get a little xp, but not much, for delivering the letters.

But, the way you did it is fine too. Either way they should not pose any threat to you. Those doppelgangers are surprisingly weak enemies.
