Yeah there are several items worth stealing like the Amulet that one of the man standing in Gallaway Post is carrying. Also you can steal a bunch of gold, it's sometimes very irritating when you want to buy something and you need 5 gold pieces more, so why don't borrow from someone :D

I read on these boards that pickpocketing was near useless, so I didn't even bother to spend any points. I don't miss it at all (yet).

The only time I can recall ever using Pickpocket was after I had saved the villagers in Shangaerne Pass. Upon freeing them, I had my rogue go and "greet" them. You'd be suprised how much money those people carry :D

Other than that, I don't know. I haven't really used it. I've stopped bothering with it. Evil parties don't steal, they pillage and plunder! Kill the women, rape the horses, that sort of stuff.

It is useful in Kuldahar and the Monastery. There are some unique items that can only be obtained with this skill, so that is why it is there...

Could you say which items? (Seeing how I've not pickpocketed, I've no idea which they are, and how usefull they are.)

It's against my personal laws. Like an anathema. I am thief, but I am good thief, assasin type that won't steal from poor people...

    I am abosolutely serious!

Steal from poor, steal from rich, they are all the same, we call it crime. Just like starting a war to conquer Europe in late '30 or starting a war to eliminate mass destruction weapons nowaday, we call it murder.

Heyhey now. Let's not force this thread into the Alley of Dangerous Angles ;)

That's the characteristic of a thief. He doesn't find himself bound by the laws of others, but only his own. Crime is his profession, so he can't obey the law. This doesn't mean a Thief has to be evil, because his morals may still guide him to a good purpose. For example stealing from a rich tyrannical dictator to fund poor people's lunch/dinner :D

The reason I don't bother with pickpocketing is because it usually fails. I don't think a game should be a quick save, quick load festival. That's another thing, the penalty for failing is usually game over, you lose because major plot character wants to kill you now.

The first time I played, I maxed my rogue out with all sorts of pick pocketing skills. Still, it seem like he failed 80% of the time. Bad luck? Maybe. I just don't bother with it anymore. I find and buy more then enough to slaughter my way through the game.

stealing is a thing for/of survival i guess... hehehe! eventhough stealing is bad but when you don't have any money and you are already starving to death, what will be your choice?steal or die? well, back to the game, yes, stealing is kinda hard in this game, the chance of failure is bigger than success,by the way,i've stolen a note from an injured man in the large tent at the town of targos. :)

Faragon. I'd really not like to spoil it for people. Send me a Private Mail and I'll spill the beans.

I think it is worth having because there are neutral and important characters that would be stupid to kill to get their stuff from even almost right up until the final big battle...

We could argue that I don't use it all the time, but then most feats and skills are not used "all the time"...

I just think that it is useful and that bards and rogues are not really ripped off with their skill points to get 10 or so pick pocketing...

Khazraj, I sent you a PM about pickpocketing...

are you saying that some unique items are only available via pickpocketing, even if you kill that character? i.e. that item is not "dropped" by the NPC after you kill them?

Well, after exchanging PM's with Kazhraj I know now that there are some interesting items to steal, but I've heard of only one yet which is actually usefull, and imho that's not worth the investment of skillpoints in pickpocketing needed to get that item.

    Krysalyn.

Yes the items are dropped, but the people are plot related and can make your game a whole lot more interesting to play, and some may even make it unfinishable if you do that...

I would not say that you should max out the skill, but it is useful. Not any skill is used constantly. Remember that it is modified by Dex and so I would not put in more than about 10 skill points.

Just try it. If you think it sux then...

[IMG] I have about 18 points into pickpocketing and I have a dex. of about 26, I usually fail, except when I try to pick pocket someone that may actually have something of value, I seem to always pass on them. I just can't steal two gold from a peasant. Whats odd though is that in the end, I just end up killing the person I took it from with a nice dagger in the back.

This sounds like unpatched game. I have never been that unlucky with pickpockets. And I never max out the skill in it.
