[IMG] Sorry but this may be fairly long but here goes.

Basically I can't play BG2 for more than 10mins without a crash (line 250 errors) and for more than about 30mins before getting to an unpassable point (black screen of death everytime I attempt to leave the area)

I had just exited Irenicus' dungeon and was in the promenade. But when I try to look at the world map or exit the area the screen goes completely black and the game freezes.

I had this problem before but on exit of the dungeon and after about 20 re-installs (I'm not exagerating unfortunately) It finally let me exit, so I thought the new problem could be solved by a re-install.
Now unfortunately all but one of my saves fails to load (stops half way through and get black screen of death) The one that does work has me in the circus tent but when I try to exit the game crashes.
I've tried using the MoveToArea cheat to bypass the worldmap but game still crashes.

    Any ideas whats wrong?
I've checked the interplay support site and tried everything to no avail. Anyone know what files deal with the world map and promenade as these seem to be the ones causing the current problem?

(System specs: AMD 900Mhz, ASUS mobo, 256Mb RAM, 40Gb HDD, TNT2 Ultra, Soundblaster Live, all latest drivers, dx8, patched BG2)

[IMG] First of all I have a question?

Do you have the original BG2 game installed or you are using a cracked copy?

The blank screen could indicate video problem. Read the manual to find out if your videocard is incompatible with BG2.

Make sure to check if your display type is supported by BG2.
    BG2 officially supports 640x480 and 800x600 resolution.
To enlighten the process you should set the display to one of these resolutions(worth one try I think)

You should check the in game config program too. You can increase the cache size, or refresh your 3DFX driver on line(if you haven't done it yet)

With the slider bars you can modify the game's look, or even you can disable the 3DFX support. I recommend to try this, but I don't know if it helps or not.

I also recommend that you install the offical BG2 patch too.

If these don't help, then the problem may be with your system. Try full scandisk, then the defragment program.

That's all I can think of momentary.
    I hope it helps some...

if you play with a character that has hacked animations like elminster...the game also crashes when you look at the map

    1. You should check if DirectX is 8.0 - if it is, do install DirectX 8.0a.

    2. The problem may be with CDs. Try to copy them all on hard drive to determine if they are busted. And I mean copy - not install.

Ok here are the answers to most of your questions

    *yep its an original
*card is supported, and exactly the same black screen thing happens whatever I set the graphics (and sound) options to.
*same thing happens with and without the patch (worse without though)
*pretty sure it is a system thing, scan disk is clear as is norton system check, but since installing BG2 my comp refuses to shut down so something is obviously screwed.
*just playin with standard animations not elminster or boo or anythin like that
*yep dx8.0 can't manage the download of 8.0a on my poor old 56k so waitin for it on a cover disk or for when i get cable.
*tried the fake install thing (where you copy the cd contents to the drive instead of installing) but still get same problems. There could be some problem with the transfer from CD to HDD, I switched off CD re-ahead, which helped a bit but not much.

The world map problem has finally stopped and I did finally manage to exit the promenade, only for the game to continually crash at the end of the conversation upon entering the slums, after several re-installs I finally got past this, but I'm still getting the crashes every 30 mins or so but no major points I can't get passed (Except upstairs in the den of seven vales in the promenade, if i get into a fight with the guys up there, the guy with the cursed beserking sword crashes the game shortly after going hostile, however i did manage to bypass this by using the cheat to kill him (ctrl+y) before he went hostile, I could then fight the others without problem)

I've had very similar problems and havent been able to solve them either. the only advice I have to export saves to a floppy, or at least out of the bladur directory, regularly. As far as i can tell it seems to do with a save getting corrupted, and when it happens it screws them all up. If I re-install, and then pull in one of the clean saves, everything works ok for a few days.

Basically, I just pull a save to a safe location after every major task completion. Some times I just live with the fact I can't use the overhead map in some areas (second floor of nalias keep for one).

I've looked everywhere for a solution to this without luck. I live with it :)

One peice of advice, when you get "locked out" of a zone, DON'T keep trying to re-load it. If you re-install immediatly, it will work 90% of the time, but if it fails to load 3-4 times it seems to corrupt something (don't ask me, I'm not a programer).

also, be sure to delete the Cache and temp and tempsave files, basically everything besides your saved games.
