[IMG] There is a male drow in my party and after two levels of rogue I multiclass him to a (specialized)wizard.
Is there any difference between a pure wizard and a diviner?Because I think my drow is get behind the rest of the party members in matter of Xps.
Drows have wizard as a favorite class, so what do I missed?

AFAIK, a "Diviner" specialization is still considered a "Wizard" for purposes of determining xp penalties for those races with favored class:wizard, such as a male drow.

If it isn't this way in IWD 2, it should be. Also, even if the Diviner specialization did incur an xp penalty, it wouldn't affect you with 2 levels of rogue and one of diviner, as all of your classes are within 1 level of each other.

If you want to double check that he's getting his due, write down his xp, kill something, then do the math to make sure he got his full share (1/6 total, if you have a full 6 person party).

Drow are considerred to be two levels higher when it comes to gaining experience. To compensate for this the start with bonus XP so the hit level 2 at the same time as other chars... After that though they have a HUGE deficit to make up for their better stats and Magic Resistance. Many of the subraces suffer similar experience penalties.

So to reach level 3 your Drow needs the experience other races need to reach level 5.

I figured that was so obvious that I didn't even bother to mention it, but on second thought, glad you did Philonious. This is most likely where he's getting tripped up.

You´re both rigth, but I´m still confused about the difference between diviner and pure wizard, for example, if you choose any gnome race, they claim that favored class for the race as a diviner and not ANY other class of wizard, so I migth be wrong here, but my Rogue 1- Wizard 4(an standart multiclass choice) it is now at level 5 AND STILL gettin behind in the total amount of XPs/6 (thank you, Philonious for the info, but it´s not the level adjustement), so starts me thinking about it.
Any other info, please help me!

Just how far behind is he getting?

Is the drow getting the same amount of xp per kill as the other characters are getting? You should find that your character's higher xp total remains in proportion during the course of the game (i.e. if you start the game at 2,000 xp higher than your non Level Adjusted party members, you should stay about 2,000 xp ahead during the game (however, there are factors such as character death that will prevent affected characters from gaining xp, so there could be some variance)).

Also, you should find that your Drow is either one ECL ahead of your non-LA characters or the same ECL as your non-LA characters. Being that your Drow is currently ECL 6 (Rogue 1 + Diviner 4 + LA1), this means that your non-LA characters should currently be Character Level 5 or Character Level 6, depending on how far along they are in the level, and assuming these characters do no have XP penalties (and also assuming that these characters have been in the party for the same amount of time as the Drow). If your characters have made it to Character Level 7 before your Drow makes it to ECL 7, then I’d say something is definitely up.

Could it be that Wizard Specializations do in fact count as separate classes with regards to xp penalties in Icewind Dale 2?

I never noticed that Gnomes favored class was diviner. Seems strange. I could understand Illusionist, but diviner seems from out of left field. In 2ED a multiclass Gnome mage (whether fighter/mage thief/mage, etc) would automatically become an Illusionist, because apparently Gnomes are tricky folk, and many of their gods typify trickery. In 3.5 edition D&D their favored class is a bard, which still seems to fit with this trickery concept. But Diviner just seems odd.

Has he ever died? Or did you add him to the group late? Stupid questions I know, but they would both affect level progression.

Gnomes prefer Illusionist... And I don't think they can choose any other class of Wizard.

If the character is last in the lineup he will receive slightly less XP due to rounding, but that wouldn't add up to 10% worth.

My mistake again, the favored class for a gnome WAS illusionist and not diviner, that´s correct but may be it´s wath Harboury said, my drow is last in the line up and seems to get down in the xp progression due to that.
And yes , I take in count that any level adjusted PC always stays ahead the amount of starting XP (drow=3000 i think).

Sounds like the mystery is solved then!

I always wondered why my final two characters were slightly behind the rest, with the final member being the most behind. Thanks for pointing that out HB!

Not a problem. It shouldn't make that much difference should it?

Not a big difference at all, but I always wanted to know this.
Anyway, now that the mistery is solved, does anybody exactly knows if "diviner" is a favored class for drow race, or just pure wizard?

Any Wizard counts as the favoured class for a male Drow, just as any Paladin Order counts as favoured for Aasimar, and any Clerical Order for female Drow. Gnomes cause most of the confusion with because they should have just Illusionist as their favoured class, but in practice (iirc) it seems that any Wizard, be it generalist or specialist, counts as favoured. It's probably either a bug or an engine limitation. Maybe Black Isle had planned to get around the problem by just restricting Gnomes to Illusionist (as in all previous 2e based IE games), but decided against it at the last minute because it either a) contradicted something in PnP 3e or b) they didn't get around to it (another one for the list of half-finished stuff in IWD2... ).

Somebody mentions if my character ever died, what´s got to do with it? There are penalties on xps if you died and resurrected?

No, but a dead character can't gain XP. So...
