Can anyone give me some advice on how to defeat the elven lich in the fields of slaughter? I can't do much once he casts improved invisibility, as most of my spells are depleted by this time. Can my party rest after talking to the orc shaman?

You should be able to rest before the fight. In any event, use area of effect type spells if you have them like Acid Storm, Fireball or Delayed Blast Fireball. These spells will hit him even after he has gone invis on you. Plus, one or two good see invisible spells should help to keep him in view.

My strat is simple, target the lich until he goes down then take out the bladesingers and the archers. If you convinced the orc scouts to help you, then have them work on the bladesingers and the archers while you focus on the Lich.

There are also other treads that speak to this topic so run a search and see some of the other creative ways others have destoryed the lich and cleansed the field of slaughter. In fact someone mentioned grabbing the holy water and running up to the pool to cleanse the field, this takes out all the undead-nice.

What about the experience points? Is it worth trying to kill the Lich?

My personal opinion, as far as xp goes I kill everything and release the elves before I use the holy water on the waterfall to cleanse the area.

I am pretty sure if you just use the water to kill all the undead you do not get the xp for killing them (only the quest xp for cleansing the fields of slaughter).

Also, remember to use your Alt button in this area and the next. There are lots and lots of goodies to be had, but some are easy to miss...

The undead orcs should help with the fight if you didn't kill them. They should kill some dread elves or whatever they're called. You might want a potion of see invisibility. Otherwise use fireball on the area where the pretty lights are coming from. That's all I can think of.

(Thanks for putting spoilers, not many people do so)
