can anyone tell me what the broken armor and the broken shield are for? they seem pretty useless but i didn't throw them out thinking i might need them for latter on in the game... and also what are the gems used for?

There is one quest where you can use broken armor/weapon in chapter 2. You can find more broken stuff nearby, so no need to keep them. Broken armor can be sold to Oswald for a bit of gold. The other pieces are useless.

Re the gems, you can sell them for money; the ones that do something have different sounding names and usually tell you in the description that they have other significance. Also, if you have a gem bag and what you think is a gem won't go in it, that means it's not just a gem.

One more thing about gems, at least once you will need a particular ordinary gem for a quest, but you can find one nearby. Just like the broken armor.
