Configuring hotkeys

[IMG] In the BGII configuration module, you are supposed to be able to configure keys with the ctrl kay -- such as "ctrl-A" to be different from just "A". The keymap shows that, when the ctrl key is down, the keys do show a different hotkey assignment. However, I cannot get the "ctrl" keys to work in the actual game. The regular keys reassign just fine. Can anyone help?

    Thanks.

Excuse me but where did you get the info that "you are supposed to be able to configure keys with the ctrl key"?

Quick keys cannot be combos with CTRL key. Combos with CTRL key are used as cheating combos and thus are predefined and unchangeable.

[IMG] When you go into the BGII configuration program, into the hotkeys "function" area, there is a message at the bottom that states (and I quote) "You can assign hotkeys to game functions here, or in the 'Keyboard' panel as well. To map a function to a hotkey, select one from the list, and press your desired key. For a Control+Key combination, hold down the Control key while pressing a key." That's where I got the idea!

Then, if you go into the hotkeys "keyboard" function and click the "ctrl" key, you can assign keys to different functios than they are assigned without the control key pressed.

However, in playing the game, the only keys that are actually assigned are alpha (mostly) keys without any other key. Pressing and holding down the control key doesn't make any difference.

Anyway, that's where I got the idea! I don't normally pick these ideas out of thin air!

I appreciate your response, even if it was somewhat abrupt and sarcastic.

Sorry for sarcastic response, but I can't find that message in my BGconfig.
Plus, your question was unanswered for 8 hours, it's not nice to leave it like that, right? :p

Anyway, you can see it by experimenting if you try to remove key assignment from a key combo, it will display as if it's not combo message.
For example, "A" key is by default AI toggle. If you click on CTRL, then right-click on "A" it will display:
    CTRL-A ->Miscellaneous: Toggle AI. Reassign?

Thought I'd give you a little feeback from my research. There was someone else who asked this same question back in November over on the BioWare Forum.

He was kind enough to answer and say yes, indeed, you can assign hotkeys to the "ctrl" key combinations. You do have to set the debug mode to "0" in the baldur.ini file.

Thanks so much for your help and misinformation. I've read a number of your posts which are somewhat demeaning to BioWare, being very careful to point out all the game mistakes. After this, you can be sure that I'll take what you have to say with a grain of salt. You may be well informed on some things, but you don't know everything -- even though you try to sound like it.

Of course I don't know everything.

    What I know is:
    - I don't have the text line in my BGconfig about CTRL configuring as you do (you probably have some special connections at Bioware I guess).
    - I don't understand why is Debug Mode = 0 needed, obviously that information is not available in any readme file or game included info, which leads me to think it is not officially supported.
    - And of course I'll continue "demeaning" Bioware because obviously you're not the first one with that question only Bioware can answer.
    - Finally I've added the line you're suggesting in my Baldur.ini, but right click again wants to reassign ToggleAI instead of Barkskin I've assigned. I guess, again my misinformation.

I believe, that's more than enough from me.

[IMG] Nope, don't have any special contacts at BioWare. And the game I have is just the regular game bought off the shelf. If you look in the BG Config file, not while playing the game, but the separate file that loaded when I install BGII, that's where you can find my quote. I don't see why mine should be special.

And, no, I don't have any special contacts at BioWare. As a matter of fact, that was my first visit to their site and my first post. I searched through the forums for "hotkeys" and came up with two posts, one of which exactly the same question I was asking. It was posted Nov of 2001 and there was no answer. However, I added my post and the original guy who posted responded with the info.

I do have to say that I've rather enjoyed our tit-for-tat and I'm impressed that you did not edit any of the posts.

    Well done.

P.S. It works in multi-player as well.
