I can in no way understand what could possibly ever be done with gems, are they just for selling?

    Yes, they are.

The only time they are used for anything(SPOILERS)..........

is when Oswald needs 2 diamonds as components for his ship mending spell.

Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot about the Fire Agates needed to open the gate/door in Dragons Eye.
    Thanks for the reminder.

You also need some gems in dragon's eye.

    How many fire agates?
I think its really stupid that they are only for selling like rings and amulets(?), cause in the gems descriptions is always something like used for elemental protection or used for somekind of magical item.
Maybe they thought to put some item forging in IWD2 but left it out for some reason or other.

[IMG] Some gems are used by Magical Craftsmanship (creation of spells, items, etc) as components. But this option is not in IWD2 (or in BG1,BGII and IWD)

Which leads me to suggest that they can also be used as marks in the Fell Wood. Of course, i would rather use arrows and bolts, but, hey, wouldn't it be something you can tell people, "oh diamonds? i use them as markers, they are worthless"
