    I was wondering;

I am planning to play all the Baldur's Gate games through as soon as Throne of Bhaal is released in Holland.
My idea is to play the first three levels as a fighter and then dual him to an envoker mage.

Question 1: Can my mage caracter use longswords? A mage with a sword looks great.
Question 2: When dualclassed the mage looks like a fighter. I do not like this. A mage has to look like a mage. Can I change the appearance from a fighter to a mage paperdoll (i.e. shadowkeeper)?

    thanks

yes the mage will look like a fighter, and you can change the paperdoll to look like anything, and the mage will be able to use longswords when it reaches level 4

Just wondering: If you import him to BG2, can you make him a Kensai/Invoker then?

No, you munchkins are limited to kensai/mage, as black isle was clever enough to make specialty mages kits.

Oh come on now, play nice ;) Remember, this is a Crpg we're playing here, hardly anything akin to actually roleplaying PnP style. However, I do agree that was the right thing to do. Specialty mages are essentially kits, and were properly classed as such. I'm glad to see we weren't allowed to have to kits in a dual class; however, I do wish they had allowed you to dual from a generic class to a kit. I'm not quite sure why not, though I'm thinking it had to do with kits in 2nd edition pnp somehow. However, as I happily discovered on my second time playing the game (BG2 of course), you can use shadowkeeper to dual to a kit if you wish, but you still can't have 2 kits regardless.

Also, why dual to a mage at such a low level. If you want much out of the fighter class, I'd dual at six. It's not as good as dualing at level 9, but then that's the best you can squeeze out of BG. Heh, just a few of my "powergaming" thoughts for the day. MWWWAAAAHHAHAAAAHHAAAHHAAA!!! ;)

I'm no powergamer , I always try to rollplay my characters the best I can; if I play a ranger I charm hostile animals instead of killing them, I always backstab with a dagger or short sword and in BG2 I never use C'Fury or Crom Faeyr because I think they're overpowered.
I was just wondering if it was possible to have two kits in BG2 this way, since it's not possible if you just start it and later dualclass.

And Yolar, It will probably be better to dualclass if you're at a higher level, level nine or even level 12, since the xp-cap is so high in ToB.

    Edit/

Storm: You have to start from mage level 1 indeed, but in BG2 you will reach level 9 very quick.

dual class at level 5 then you still reach level 7 mage and get the level 4 spells, and if u dual class in bg2 woundnt you go back to being level 1? personaly in bg2 that doesnt sound like a good idea

You might even want to dual at level seven with a fighter, as you can still finish the game even with a weak mage if you have a strong support party. Or you could wait till you get into SoA and dual at level 9 or 13. And as Silvershade said, it really doesn't take long to make up those missing levels if you dual at level 9.

Why would I want to dualclass at such a high level? I only want to play with a mage who can use a sword, because it looks cool.

It is all about the looks, isn't it?

[IMG] don't know if this helps, but in IWD I DC'd my fighter to mage at 2nd level! That way he could use a long sword (like Gandalf in LOTR) & bow, while not really limiting his spell casting ability.

Well it depends what you want Yolar. If you want it just for looks, then sure, no reason not to dual at level 3. However, my Kensai Mage, even with fighters with their levels in the 20's, can still hadle his own in melee. He has around 143 hp, decent thaco still, and with all the nice equipment available, he can still go in melee. Even with my character having 2 level 9 spell slots, my Kensai/Mage still spends about half his time slugging it out in melee, and with pretty good results to boot. And before ToB, my main had no problem with most enemies in SoA. So it depends what you want really. If you want it just for looks a few extra HP, go ahead. But dualing at level three, you won't get much more than that. And that's cool if that's what works for you. But if you want a mage that can go in melee, even against higher level enemies and still do fine, I'd dual at at least level 9.

Incidently, if you were to cast tenser's transformation on him now, he'd be an absolute tank.
