[IMG] I have tried to import custom portraits into my game. I followed the directions in the readme and read some of the posts in this forum. I've made a new portraits directory. The portraits are the right size, the right format (.bmp), and have the correct number of letters in their file names.

When I click on custom during the character creation, I get access to the files I've installed. When I try to use one, I get a blank face with a question mark. Anyone know what to do next?

Same thing happened to me with Baldur's Gate. Try quitting to the desktop, restarting the game, and trying again.

No, I tried that. I even rebooted. Still the same thing.

I should also mention I'm using portraits from two different web sites, so the portraits themselves shouldn't be the problem.

I have my pictures in C:bad:Games\id2\portraits
They are 42x42 or 210x330 bmps, named with the bmp extension. If that doesn't work for you, I have no idea what's wrong...

Did you assign two pictures, one for the paperdoll page and one smaller one for the main action screen? If you do not assign a smaller picture for the main screen, the game defaults to the question mark. If the customs don't have both available, assign the same to both and you will get just the top (right hand corner?) of the portrait. Most of the portraits available here on SP have both to use.

Thanks all for the suggestions! When I try to create a character using a custom portrait, I get the question mark in the character creation screen as well as in-game. Yes, I have both small and large pictures selected. I have tried creating a character from scratch using a new portrait and I have tried starting with an in-game portrait and switching them at the start of the game.

Could this be a Direct X thing? I didn't install Direct X 8. I'm pretty sure I have it installed already, but maybe I'm wrong.

try to save it as a bmp lower than 24 bit....if it still doesn't work, make sure the extension is in lower case (bmp not BMP)....some programs can get annoying over this. also try a shorter filename

The portraits in jpg format are 24 bit. When saved as bmp, the portraits become 32 bit. I didn't realize that would happen! Since I can't use the jpg format what can I do? Arianyr mentioned saving the portraits as a bmp lower than 24 bit ... how would I do this?

when saving it in mspaint, change the filetype (right under where you type filename). In photoshop, it gives you a dialog when saving. other than that, it depends on the program. Some programs you may have to change # of colours before saving and then save.

[IMG] Thanks Arianyr and Mind Child! Using MS Paint worked. MS Paint uses 24-bit bmp as the default file type, though I had to click the drop-down menu and select it in order for it to work. If I didn't select it myself, the portrait remained a 32-bit bmp. Weird, eh?

I have a black bar at the bottom of the portrait when in the Record screen. Perhaps a little tweaking will get rid of it. If not, no problem - I can live with it!

    Thanks again everyone! :)
